How good a player was John O'Neil, yet another Saints player who was overlooked whilst playing for us and only picked up one cap for Scotland having moved to Hibs!

First half after a very good opening 10 minutes or so, I thought we struggled to get hold of the ball and were hemmed in for periods, but second half I thought we were very good and worthy of the win.
Aberdeen passed it around nicely first half but didn't create much,  whereas Saints had a couple of clear chances.  I thought we'd sat far too deep, with Spoony particularly almost beside Tanser. Watt's forward play and Kennedys desire to run at opponents were our only real threats, other than the sitter Callachan missed.
Second half was far better, we played much higher up the pitch and Spoony looked far more effective going forward. Bringing on Alston in a central position was the decisive move. He had a good run in behind that was unfortunately on his left where Lewis blocked his pass across for potentially an easy finish for Watt or Kennedy. Either from that corner, or around that time, Joe headed the opener. Three minutes later Blair scored a screamer as he curled it over Lewis.
Saints had at least two very strong penalty shouts; Kennedy when he skinned Lowe(?) and drove into the box, and when Callachan got scythed down by Logan, only for the ref to give a free kick on the edge of the box.
A textbook St Johnstone performance defensively, but the huge difference this season is we can hurt teams on the counter. We might not come out on top of many games in terms of possession, but in terms of chances created we will. I remember during the World Cup there was a coach who was quoted as saying he felt possession as a stat was overrated, it was far more significant what you do with it.  I would say that definitely applies to Saints this season.
The back four were magnificent. Jason Kerr was arguably the best defender on the park. If McKenna is worth over £6m, then I hope we don't let Kerr go for the first bid that comes in.  Kennedy is a threat everytime he gets on the ball, even playing wide today.
Great three points. Not many times* supporting St Johnstone do I remember Saints fans singing "we are unbeatable"!!

I've attempted to put together a wee video to encourage a bit more colour, noise and hopefully a few extra folk along on Saturday.
Its far from professional, but if the editing isn't too dodgy,  please share it about to see if we can get a bit of a 'blue and white' day on Saturday as has been suggested, and a few more Saints fans to head along.

I take it you've both been to home matches with Celtic in recently years?  It's already effectively a 'home' game for them due to numbers and noise. If you're telling me we're only going to give them 1000 tickets and have a mostly empty stadium so we outnumber them and have an advantage then **** aye I'm up for that.  But we're not. We're talking about giving them 7000 instead of 4800, when we will likely have about 2000 there either way.
Just to emphasise the point I made in the long post higher up; I want us to win this game and get to the semi-finals. I genuinely think we've got a good chance of doing so.  Them having 2200 more fans makes little difference to that.  But if it means we get a quality central midfielder in then I'll deal with letting some rancid bigot sit in the East Stand for a one off game.
I agree with Jets post higher up that Saints fans concentrated together in the Main rather than spread out might make a decent bit of noise. I'd also love it if the young team turned up with their drum and sat right behind the Celtic dugout and belted out tunes everytime Rodgers tried to shout instructions.  Nobody's talking about lying down to them here.
I remember being at McDiarmid in the early years when all the OF got was 1800 tickets in the North Stand with three stands packed full of Saints fans; it was brilliant.  As much as I'd love that to be the case, it's not going to happen anytime soon.

RG I don't know what you're talking about giving them the whole stadium? Are you suggesting Saints fans will miss out if we give Celtic fans 3 stands? I would love us to outnumber them, and if I thought there was any chance of it then no way would I give them more tickets.
And yes, this game is after the window shuts, but the money can be made available as we will know roughly how much we will make from the game. That's generally how you budget.

We've got a few really exciting players this season: Watt, Wright, Scougall, Kennedy and have a very promising defence as well.  It could be the most exciting team to watch for a good few seasons.  I think the missing central midfielder is so important to us kicking on and having an outstanding season if we can keep players fit. If not, i think we'll be safe but Bottom Six again, which is fair enough but we are close to being able to push for a lot more.

Seems bizarre that they would hold the event in such a small venue. I'm sure they could have used a much bigger venue and allowed the wider support an opportunity to purchase tickets for an event which I'm sure would appeal to many.

    Hi everyone.
Found out the news about my dad on Friday. It was very sudden but as none of his family were in Panama at the time details are few and far between at the minute. Expecting a call from the Embassy in the next couple of days and will know more then.
He was a great Dad and loved nothing more than telling me on a Saturday morning who he’d been winding up on WAP over the last few days and who he was beating in the predictor!
Being away from Perth for many years meant this place gave him an outlet for all things St Johnstone and enabled him to have debates and conversations, which many of us get in the pub on a Saturday afternoon, with all of you.
Thanks to anyone who berated him, nibbled at his bait or rised to him any time he put up a nonsense post as he thrived on it and, while he often came across as abrasive on here, it was always in jest with a tongue firmly in cheek and his way of still being involved with saints from a far.
My brother Saul and I (Joss) would like to pass on our thanks to everyone for their kind words and for humouring him over the past few years

Unfortunately I think this post says a lot about why people are annoyed in the first place - there's a real feeling of this being a tickets-for-yer-mates scenario and the fact that you managed to get five tickets for something that most people didn't even know about, and that you're clearly on good/friendly terms with one of the committee, doesn't really come across very well. Rightly or wrongly, I think there's a real impression with a lot of these off-the-field events that you need to be in an "in crowd", or be mates with the right people, in order to be involved or attend. That's a real shame when you consider how popular a player Chris Millar is for us and I think a lot of Saints fans would like to feel that they at least have the same fair chance of getting tickets for events that everyone else does, even if the venue is small.
I know how much unpaid and thankless work goes into organising stuff like this and I'm not taking a pop at anyone - and I know fans will always have a moan regardless of what happens - but at the same time I think there have to be lessons learned from things like this.

So, was it advertised to the wider support, or, was it a case that Roddy and Steve Browns associates got first refusal?
Just seems strange that a testimonial year is announced, but we are told that the first event is sold out.

One thing I would point out given a lot of the comments have been quite negative after this match. Last season we beat our top flight points record and that was achieved by the bulk of this squad. The only first team regular we have lost from that side is Swanson, and we've replaced him with Scougall and O'Halloran. We would have liked to have kept Scobbie, but he decided to leave after being offered a significant pay cut.
Given that we're still in the top half of the table and well clear of relegation, I think Tommy and this set of players deserve to be given time to turn things around before we completely hang them out to dry. Yes, we all know Denny Johnstone just isn't good enough in a position that should have been the priority in the summer and that will absolutely have to be addressed in January, but I'd like to think the rest of the squad and the manager have enough credit in the bank to give the club the benefit of the doubt until the January window closes at least.
Come next summer we probably do need to think about clearing out some of the longer terms members of the squad. Whether they are past it or perhaps gone a bit stale, we could probably use some fresh blood/options in a lot of positions.

Stevie Brown getting it in the neck again...............so we have money in the bank........good at least we will have a club to support going forward.
The budget was set and the manager decides how to spend it.  TW made his choices and it would appear that a striker was not high priority based on who he eventually signed....but that was his judgement call.
If the footballing public in Perth and surrounding catchment area supported their local team then perhaps better calibre players could be signed however the reality is we get gates of around 2000 to 2600 for most home games.
SB & TW are doing the best they can with the resources they have at their disposal and the type and quality of player we can attract that they want to be part of the club.

We've seen much worse performances against Thistle. Just a bit of great play by Storey, and our lack of decent crosses or killer pass meaning very little is happening for us going forward. We started both halves well, with a few decent moves, mostly down the right, and the injuries knocked us well off our stride in the first half. We actually played a lot more football than we've seen for a few matches, without much end product.
We just need a break to get a bit of confidence going again. Hopefully the fans don't turn against the players and start booing in frustration, they probably need a decent bit of backing and support more now than at any other time.
Comrie was excellent today, probably our biggest threat going forward. Still finding it frustrating how Liam Craig is the attacking central midfielder ahead of Scougall, but doesn't look like we're going to see ScougZ there anytime soon.
If this turns out to be a transitional season where we comfortably finish outwith relegation in the bottom 6, but have bled a lot of younger players into starting first team performers, and we are shaping a team for the years to come, then I can handle that. Clark, Comrie, Gordon, Shaughnessy, Scougall and one or two others is the foundation of a team that could be around for a while.
The striker situation really needs a lot of attention in January. For all the promising youngsters, it doesn't seem like many on the fringe are attacking midfielders or strikers.
