Surely that has to be a record for the amount of players that have said yes by Monday!?

First post in a while, but been reading forum for years. This is honestly one of the most depressing discussions I've seen, possibly ever, on this forum.

So our budgets have been cut.....

We are a relatively poor club with a low turnover and have been running a loss for a while, which has eaten into our cash reserves. These cash reserves only exist cause of the sensible(and arguably fantastic) way that our club has been run over the years by our board, especially the Browns. For a few years not that long ago we posted profits based on property deals and the non footballing income of the club has long been a vital part of the clubs turnover. Our gates are low and with arguably three of the biggest four clubs in the country not even in our league this season the turnover is set to drop again.

As has been said in various places we've been renting training facilities down in Stirling for the last few years, the club are now sensibly, with the long term survival of the club in mind, investing in our own facilities. The benefits to this are impossible to argue against. Saints players will now be in Perth, making them a visible and arguably more approachable part of the community; the cost of maintaining our facilities will be much cheaper than the rent at SU; the land was already owned by the club and they've been able to adapt existing facilities within the stadium so although the outlay is high it's not that high. There's also the chance for us to increase our income by renting out the facilities to some of the further north part time league clubs and any number of other teams. Which is a fantastic use of a cash injection that we've been lucky to get.

The club were stung a bit by the cost of travel to the Belarus game last season and maybe that's why the budgets haven't been finalised. They won't want to be taking out a loan or an overdraft to pay for a 5-6 figure travel bill. Now we know we're going to the relatively cheap(to get to) Switzerland, we might find that there is some activity on the manager or May's contracts.

Youth players getting a chance is great to see and there's so much enthusiasm around Brown and Kane in particular, as others have said a hungry eager Kane is a much better option that Iwelumo(sp?) or Fallon. It would have been nice to keep a flair player like Hasslebank but he was on a high wage and the club cannot afford to pay one of it's highest wages to a player that inconsistent, as great as he was when he was on it.
Youth recruitment(and player recruitment generally) must be a difficult aspect of running a club and if young guys see they'll get a chance to play for saints we become a much more attractive club to sign for. Which is fantastic for the long term growth and development of the club.

It is frustrating that we possibly won't be seeing any new signings this summer, but we have a strong squad and the league is arguably weaker than last year, we'll still finish 6-8th which is pretty good going for the size of squad we have, money we make/spend and relative size of the club.

The PR could be improved, in terms of keeping fans in the loop but then the level of detail that a fan of a football club wants probably doesn't match up all that well with good business practice. The Brown's may come across as dour and not very excitable but then I think that may be a Carse thing. My partners from the Carse and we live out here and I swear everyone just sort of gets on with everything without much fuss, hardly the worst characteristics to have, it is possibly this level headiness that kept the club being run on an even keel when other clubs were jizzing money up the wall.

The board has shown throughout the time the Browns have been involved have consistently shown that they they have the clubs best interests at heart and plan our spending as part of the long term with the bigger picture in mind. That is what this feels like again, the pieces are being put in place to ensure that this great club continues to be abel to run and over achieve in the best ways that it can. I for one believe that everything that is being done in the interest of the club.

Nuggets, as captain of PSJ I am speaking on behalf of the team and I refuse to let you go into retirement from PSJ for that specific reason. As Al said, that is extremely harsh on yourself and it is not deserved. One game sticks out in my head where we played Dunfermline and lost 3-2 with yourself in goal. I had an absolute nightmare that game, 2 of the goals were from my errors and you had no chance with them.

So basically we all have those games. Look at Gareth bale, whenever he use to play for spurs they lost...where is he now?

End of the day, PSJ are always available if you can/want to play.

In the process of organising this just now with a help from David.

Provisional date that looks to be okay is Sunday the 24th of August at Dunning GC

Sean was a member at Dunning for a couple of years so David thought it would be nice to hold it out there.  The course is a 9 Holer, but challenging all the same.

Format likely to be; Roll and Coffee on arrival, 18 holes(for the Sean Wallace trophy) Soup and Sandwiches for lunch, then 9 holes(maybe Texas Scramble like last year) then a 2 course meal after.

If any PSJ guys are interested then let me know.  I'l be back with prices etc once the details are confirmed!  Also there will hopefully be transport arranged from Perth also.

    Nick

Was 1-1 at half time but there were a couple of injuries just after half time and from this we found it difficult to stay in the game. As the time went on we needed to get a goal to get back in it at 2-1, and lost late goals as we were committing more men forward. Can't fault the effort from the lads, we gave it our best shot.

    Thanks for the continued support.

Thanks to all who made the trip down - great to have such a big squad for our furthest away tie to date! Thought we played the better football in the first half but it was a lot more even in the second half. Chances were hard to come by but a lot of that I'd say was down to the weather.

Matty got both MoM awards to go with his goal. If I remember right the penalty scorers were Dale, Dan, Hendo, Joss and Nick(?).

The draw for the quarter finals will take place next Saturday. We are already joined by West Ham, Bury A, Runcorn and Southport. Still to play are Hearts v Preston, Livi OL v Man Utd and Livi GS v West Brom. Tough games for the remaining Scottish teams with Preston and West Brom both having won the cup in recent years and Man Utd doing well in the plate competition at Worldnet last year.

Thanks to our loyal supporters for turning up on the day...you managed to double our regular crowd! Thanks also for doing a match report.

Speaking of which, Jim Masson from the Evening Tully phoned me last night to ask about the game and he's planning on running an article at some point this week - I'll let you know when it appears. I've also to let him know when we're playing our quarter final tie and he'll try do something for us again. So if any players feel like they're being followed there's a decent chance its the papparazzi looking for a scandal. Except you Dunbar - it's more likely to be undercover cops.

Pleased to be through to the next round after playing in difficult conditions but it was deserved.

    Thanks for the messages.
Also, thanks to the two supporters who stayed the whole game in the freezing conditions and gave us words of encouragement! Speaking on behalf of the team, we really appreciated it.

Yeah seems an interesting tactic from Saints. Bringing in young players at 17/18 to try and blood the first team. I think you will find that after a few years with Alistair Stevenson we won't need to as there will be players coming through our youth setup, it just seems to me we are filling a gap at the moment caused by a failed youth system over the last decade.

I agree! It's his words against our club at the moment and for some stupid reason a lot of people on here are going with his. Yes he was half decent and yes we wanted him to stay but our club made a decision. Lets move on, we have Europe to be thinking of!

I'd like to think SB will save some wage money for January to help fund some loans if we need it then.
Agree with it going to be a tough season but as long as we stay up I'm happy.

Liam caddis to be the next Liam Craig but better!

I think it would also be a good idea that we win the Europa cup next season just to show that we didn't need him.
That would good along nicely with the league title.

The lad hasn't really said anything, he has been hiding behind the Ross county idiots, for all we know he could be being abused and being kept in a cage.

Perth St Johnstone take on Livingstone in the Scottish Cup final tomorrow and it is set to be an emotional game for all involved. Early team news indicates that PSJ as missing some key players for this game which has seen them become the underdogs for tomorrows match. Reports are suggesting that Stewart Whyte and Jack Henderson are out due to injuries to their hamstring and Cricket-syndrome. PSJ manager Kevin Riddell was interviewed earlier on in the week and had this to say: “Ach well, huge loss but credit to the lads who have trained hard over the past week. Listen, we’ll give it our best shot”.

PSJ beat Livingston #2 4-3 in the semi finals and there was a wonder goal from veteran Al Christie and he is yet to sign a new contract for next season. Rumours have suggested that he is set to hang his boots up at the end of the season. This would cause manager Kevin Riddell problems for next season as Al Christie has been an ever consistent player for PSJ. Al Christie was the first ever goal scorer for PSJ and without a doubt he will always be remembered for his father figure within the team. Manager Kevin Riddell had this to say on Al Christie contract situation “Listen, I have spoken to the chairman and told him I want him on a 5 year deal, he is vital to my future plans and there is not a chance he will be retiring at the end of the season; he still has many years left to play.” Al Christie has refused to comment on his future further increasing speculation.

In other team news Greame Rodger looks set to return from injury after a long absence from the team because of an ‘I have a kid’ injury. His return provides PSJ a boost and some people have suggested that his return is like having a new player in the team. His absence from the team has lead to PSJ being unable to keep any clean sheets this season. Douglas Spew does not look likely to feature from the knee injury that he endured during that semi final win against Livingston #2. This will then leave the left back slot a difficult position to cover with his absence, increasing the managers head ache. Rumour has it Nick ‘PC’ Elder has stolen a boat to make it back in time for the game. It is thought because he has close friends within the old bill he feels he can do what he wants. PSJ released a statement stating “we fully expect him to be there to play”.

Huge pressure has also been put on Chris Pink performance in tomorrows final as he has just recently returned from an intense training programme in Ghana. Chris Pink took the decision to take leave from playing for PSJ and travel to Ghana for a six month training programme where it was suggested that he was training just for this cup final tomorrow. Some people have criticised his decision to abandon his team mates but Chris has refused to be drawn onto this topic and he said “My focus is on playing well, I do not wish to discuss all the performance enhancing drugs that I have previously taken”.

One player who is enjoying his time at PSJ is Daniel Potter who recently signed a new contract that takes him up to December 2013. He commented saying “I am just happy that I have sorted my future out and I can get my head down and do what I do best. I couldn’t commit further than December as I have other commitments but I am ready and prepared for tomorrow”. Reports have suggested that his other commitments include quidditch and playing with Bunsen burners; however Daniel has refused to comment on this. Another player to recently sign a new contract is Stewart Elvis, he seemed delighted when he was seen at the swimming disco at the Perth leisure pool on Saturday night. Another swimmer, who wished not to be named saw Stewart jumping about on inflatables and doing ‘bombs’ in the deep end whilst shouting ‘PSJ’.

Finally, captain Michael Rodger was interviewed by Sky Sports News today ahead of the final tomorrow which can be seen on Sky Sports 1 from 2pm; this includes extended interviews from Dale Walker, ‘Kirky’ and The Wee Lee. Michael who has a few coaching offers to consider at the end of the season is also out of contract at the end of the season. He is thought to be considering leaving PSJ at the end of the season to take up a new coaching role with unnamed clubs. Michael had this to say “This is the first time we have made it to the final and we are going to give it our best shot. It has been my greatest honour to captain this side this season and I really hope we can finish this season on a high”. He also refused to comment on his future however he did have this to say “My English writing skills may be debatable but my determination is not questionable, we are playing tomorrow to win. MON THE PSJ!”
