Possibly says something about the state of Scottish football that I say the thread title as "126 Spl Players Out of Contr..." and immediately thought it was "out of control".

With any luck there will be a bit of movement in the close season.

I thought it was a reasonable idea at first, but the more I've thought about it, the more sceptical I've become. It all feels a bit artificial. It would seem like there wasn't a real season, just two different halves, kind of stitched together.

However, I could put up with anything if only we could get some sense of continuity to the season. It's a real shame that, in points terms, this has been another great season for us, but I can't remember when a season felt so flat. Since Christmas there's been no continuity at all. We hardly ever play on Saturdays. We have had long periods of inactivity. There's been nothing of the normal sense of ebb and flow.

We've got into the top six for the second year running. We have a very good chance of Europe again. When we do play, we show some really attractive flair. And yet I'm almost looking forward to the end of the season. I think that's such a shame. Football on Saturday afternoons - it works, it adds to the drama. I'd love to get back to that, but I fear that TV and money means we never will. Meanwhile, the attendances show that people are falling out of love with the game.

what is there to reply to, apart from intemperate ranting?

Perhaps someone could highlight the work the Council does in silence, behind the scenes. Some of the children's safeguarding work, massively complex, always unheralded, unnoticed till something goes wrong, that keeps children safe. Or adults safeguarding. Or the work with older residents which allows them to stay in their own homes with dignity rather than being put into hospitals. The home helps. The School Improvement services which help schools maintain standards. The scaffies who keep the streets clean and take away your rubbish so you don't have to sort it out yourself. The household waste sites. The libraries that provide you with free access to thousands of books and give you free internet access. The Youth workers who work with disaffected young people and try (sometimes successfully) to keep them out of trouble. The fostering and adoption services that try to ensure a decent future for kids with difficult lives. The pest control people who come out and sort your rat trouble or wasp dike. The transport services that get kids to school. And old folks to centres. The economic regeneration work that tries to bring investment into the area. Aye, maybe you could mention some of them. Or maybe you could just call the Council a bunch of kunts and leave it at that.

It is easy to take the high moral ground when you are a well run team like Saints. It is hard to disagree with a lot of what has been written but I can't help but feel sorry for the fans and the town. I suspect that unlike Rangers the majority of their fans are actually from Dunfermline, and contribute to the club & community. Yet again the fans at the mercy of an inept chairman. There but for the grace etc!

I think it's wrong to conflate the way a club is run during a particular period, by a particular set of owners, with the history of that club itself. As Singapore says above, DAFC are a traditional club, much like ours, and we have had a healthy rivalry over the years. To simply say "good riddance" is short-sighted. We need clubs like DAFC, and Dundee and the rest, to have a good, enjoyable league. The idea of never playing Dunfermline again would be very sad.

There will be a lot of Pars fans out there very worried about the future of their club. A bit of empathy, please: imagine how we'd have felt if Geoff had turned out to be a shyster out to make a quick buck out of St Johnstone and he led us to penury. We're lucky he and his son are men of honour who do their best for the club. It might not have been like that. And it might have been us in Dunfermline's position today.

Celtic in the final game of the 73/74 (?) season. We had to win to get into the new Premier League. We won 2-1. Absolutely brilliant day, I can still remember the excitement I felt as I went up the wooden steps into the Centre Stand and looked out at Muirton Park. I was hooked from then on. It remains my greatest Saints experience.

Roy Baines, late in his career, played for us one season when we were badly relegated from the Premier League. He was immense that season. If it wasn't for him we'd have been humped week in week out.
