Just got back from the qualifier game played in front of a tick over 32 000 people here in Sydney tonight. The Aus team was made up of entirely of local boys from the "A" league and the drop in class from the socceroos who played at the world cup to this was dramatic. Kuwait were a pretty lively team, they looked a very drilled and disciplined team and kept their shape at the back for the majority of the game. Their midfield were workman like but didnt really create much for their men up front. For the Aussies they looked very disjointed and had nothing happening when in possesion and it was no great surprise when the teams went in at nil nil at half time. The second half was just as poor until the Aus care taker coach made two changes and bought on two wingers who finally gave the team the width they had been lacking. The first Aus goal came from ex Livi player David Carney skipping past his man and cutting the ball back to an unmarked player who slotted the ball past the keeper, with roughly 15 mins left on the clock, this was the goal which seemed to knock the wind out of the away team. The second Aus goal came from a great run by the Aus winger who had a great shot on goal, the keeper parried the ball staright to the an unmarked Aus player who tapped in from all of 2 yards. That made it 2 nil on 86 mins and it was all over. This now makes it 3 wins from 3 games in the Aussies group, with basically one more point required for qualification. Lebanon has pulled out of the group, which means a point from Bahrain at home, Kuwait away, will see the boys through, if the team is given the three points for next match which was due to be played against Lebanon next week in Adekaide, the boys have qualified. With the full Aus squad available for the remainder two qualifiers hopefully it will see the team qualify for the Asian games if the points from the Lebanon forfit are not given.. A decent performance with players who are not international class but did the job and secured all three points. Aus football is gaining some momentum down here finally on the back off the "A" league and World Cup qualification.
