How is the Well gate or Nethergate or whatever gate doing in these tough times ?

Struggling! There are plenty empty shops, big department stores Arnotts and Draffens are long gone leaving gaps, filled with charity shops and pound shops. On the plus side Dundee has 3 times the population of Perth including 25 thousand students, many of whom live in and around the centre and Perth road area, most of whom will not have cars but will have a disposable income to keep bars, Tesco metros, coffee sandwich shops going. Dundee would not be the prosperous hub of the knowledge economy, with elegant cosmopolitan eateries, galleries, theatres, avant-garde street furniture etc without those universities!

Didn't even know Dundee had one university, never mind more than one.

Got to blame the council. Anyone in the private sector is having to keep business and win back business lost and new business. Many companies are proactive, thinking out of the box. Not something the council are capable of.

Why not susidise rates, rather than hanging baskets. Might look nice but no one comes to Perth to see them. Lower rates might encourage new business both small traders and national companies.

Also the planning dept turn down applications hiding behind listed bldg regulations. I.E St Pauls Church, is that really still of historical/architectural interest. It is a feckin ruin, dangerous to us all other than the pigeons.

Now we have time and money being wasted on the debate over the City Hall. If not in favour of change, then come up with some suggestions as to what it can be used for in its current state that will have it being self funding. If it cannot suppport itself get rid!

Now we are spending money trying to get city status, what a joke, we are heading more towards a shanty town. Empty shops, urine soaked historic vennels and streets full of neds and drunks at 9am.

Fair City, dont make me laugh!

Well its better to walk through princes st gardens rather to look at the disaster that is princes street.

that is true, Princes Street is a f**k up at the moment, but Perth aint no Edinburgh. There are so many attractions in the capital that will keep people coming back (in their millions) that it can get away with the wart that is Princes Street.....although walking along it, you still get a view of the castle, the RBS World HQ, the Balmoral Hotel etc etc

The Gardens are fantastic, but would struggle if they were the only things there

Just walked through town and over the last few months not only has Mothercare shut, but also the Ice Cream Parlour in George Street, The Milk-Shake Bar, the Baguette Express, The Camera shop opposite Argos, Past-Times & Laura Ashley, and they were just the ones I noticed!

TS has Mothercare not just decamped to a retail park? The others, apart from Laura Ashley which went into Admin pruning a lot of branches, sound like they were franchises or one man bands! Thus they fell when times got tougher as others historically did.
