Thursday's qualifier to 2 round of the Europa League will be the first official match for St Johnstones new manager Tommy Wright. North Iren, who was an assistant coach last year, took over the team last month after Millwall hijacked last year's manager Steve Lomas.

Wright has worked as a keeper in including Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, Bolton and Manchester City. As a manager, however, this is his first attempt at the highest level. And after leading the team in just two friendlies think he will be a tough task to face Rosenborg.

- We just have to be positive and think that we have done something to deserve this chance to qualify. It will be a shock to many if we go any further, but larger shocks have happened in football before, said Wright told The Herald Sun.

When he had seen the first match against Crusaders and Rosenborg win over Lillestrom. And although there were two wins to RBK so he did not see Rosenborg in their best form. The challenge for Wright is still getting its own team in shape in time.

Saturday they beat Greenock Morton from the Scottish second level 1-0 in a friendly, but St Johnstone have barely begun pre-season and is a short distance away match form.

- We must have the attitude that we can win these battles. Rosenborg are halfway through their season and we have only 180 minutes in the legs after games against Cowdenbeath and Morton, but we have got the players in such good shape we have been able to within the timeframe we had. So we should not use that as an excuse.

St Johnstone were eliminated in the same round of last year's qualification for aggregate 1-3 loss for Turkish Eskisehirspor. Midfielder Chris Millar believes that the team has learned from the experience and would appear better in this year's qualifying.

- When we went to Turkey last year we had too much respect for the opponent, and we were too passive and defensive. I think we need to find the right balance so that we do not become overly cautious, but not naive offensively so we do not Rosenborg easy.
