LondonSuperJ
I was quite young when Clark was sacked and I don't really remember the full ins and outs of it, only that he wasn't that popular with the players, Roddy Grant being another to have said something similar. What was it Griffin was referring to?
Lincolnshire no More
I was living away and I don't know either. I don't really care, but let's remember "the future's blue"!
blueheaven
Great player in his day, crying shame that it never really worked out for him after leaving Saints. Â Interesting to hear what he's saying about the club getting better and better. In my view the club is currently at the place Paul Sturrock once said he was trying to get us to: i.e. a solid top-half of the table club who are good enough to get the occasional Cup semi or final, plus the odd European match, on top of a long-term secure place in the top flight. Obviously it takes only one bad season or long run of bad results for that all to go wrong and relegation to become a threat - but it really feels at the moment as if the club is in a better long-term place than it's possibly ever been. lethamsaintee
Great guy, great player. Played against him a couple of years ago, an utter class apart. Really glad he's on the payroll at Saints. Obviously a Saints fan too, used to turn up at games, even when he was on the books at other clubs. Kevin James Is On Stilts
Top stuff. Hadn't realised Danny was working with Saints now. Â It really helps to build on the 'family club' tag when you see former player being welcomed back and getting involved once their playing career's over. Callum, Roddy, Danny - I'm sure there are more. They all do it with a smile on their faces too. Once a Saintee, always a Saintee! Â Â I was quite young when Clark was sacked and I don't really remember the full ins and outs of it, only that he wasn't that popular with the players, Roddy Grant being another to have said something similar. What was it Griffin was referring to? Â Same situation here, I was young when Clark went so didn't really get the full story. Pretty intrigued to hear...did he just not get on with the players? Or was something more juicy to the story?
LondonSuperJ
I know Roddy's gripe was in existence by Monaco and Griffin left at the end of the year. If it was just a matter of not getting on with the players I reckon they hung around for the Europe run and left off after that. Always wondered if ti was connected to the O'Boyle/Thomas nightclub affair. In short, I'm intrigued as to what happened to put off a whole squad of players! Â I can remember during Clark's first season when he was doing well, quite a big deal was made of the fact that Clark was like "one of the boys" and used to socialise with the players after matches etc. It seems to have all turned sour pretty quickly after that though. Like one of the posters above, I've always suspected the Thomas/O'Boyle incident was a turning point that Clark never recovered from. It was around that point that results started to go downhill and Clark never managed to turn that around. Â We still played some of the best football I've ever seen Saints play under his management, though - 4-0 v Hibs, 5-0 v Motherwell, 3-0 in the Cup semi-final against Hearts, 4-1 against Aberdeen, 3-1 against Rangers, 3-3 against Monaco - some of those performances were amazing, even though the wheels soon fell off. Absolutely. That wee spell was akin to the period from January 96 until April 97 under Luggy. Great times. Then after promotion Sturrock took a more measured approach, and Clark when he took over had us playing some swashbuckling stuff after that. He might be seen as a 'sherman tank' now but still deserves a bit of credit.
