byebyedundee
Aird,, Hall, Connolly, Pearson and Aitken were all MO'H or Stevie May status. I remember the 2-2 at Parkhead when the great Celtic European team were at their best but all the class came from the Saintees. Ormond's boy's were still the best on their day but Tommy Wrights is the best overall team but we do not yet have that forward line to match the 70's legends - although thinking about and Spoony's second goal on Saturday they are not far away!success is measured by trophies and nothing else. Therefore this his current team under TW. Is the best ever. However your team of the or mind era is 2nd by far

ex-montrosesaintee
In my opinion, you can only really judge a football team by success, so yes, this is the best Saints team ever.
blueheaven
success is measured by trophies and nothing else.Wouldn't agree with that. There are lots of successes in football that don't involve winning a trophy. Qualification for Europe, for example, will always be regarded as a success for Saints. uphallsaint

wee john
you cannot compare, it is certainly the most successful period in our history but as far as the best team ever, it is probably not.The Ormond era was more difficult to finish 3rd in the league, so arguably that was the best team ever, playing against far better quality teams. Would this team beat Hamburg 3-0? definitely not, if you compared player for player most that have seen both teams would pick far more of the Ormond team. babychunder, sixties saintee, Coltrane and 1 other
babychunder
agree completely John, also some of the folks posting here are too young to have seen the Ormond team so how do they judge which is better?

Agree too John but before my time, you could also apply that same argument to the 98/99 team that finished 3rd, when there was a lot more money around and the tribute act were still in the top league. Markinch Saint
I think we'd beat them about 10-0, you have to remember that Gio van B, Jorg, Lorenzo et al are well into their 40s now Remember also the great 98/99 squad getting gubbed 7-0 at home to Rangers not too long before the LC final that season.I agree with your point about this current squad, I can't really see us completely capitulating like that against any domestic side. Even against Celtic this weekend we're going in with great great confidence.Team spirit, never say die attitude, don't know when they're beaten etc, that's where the manager comes in.They used to say that Fergie was worth at least 10 points a year to Man Utd because of the extra effort he managed to get out of his players, I wonder how many extra points Tommy is worth to Saints right now. candalan
jhq
According to the medya we're not very good and never have been. Problem? Up until this season I'd agree with that. In all fairness though, we've had a pretty good deal from the media this season.
lang toon saintie
If we are talking about the best team then it has to be the Ormond era in terms of success it has to be the current side. Markinch Saint
Again like both of you guys I'm too young to remember the Ormond team, but the 98/99 team also had a resilience about them, the 7-0 humping apart. That was a Sunday night live on Sky sports game where U.S. East standers used to have to move to west stand and give up 3 of our other stands to the knuckle draggers. Kanchelskis dong his party trick of standing on the ball and looking around, taking the piss. You've got to remember that a lot of these players were only at Rangers due to the EBT scam, receiving vast wages, but somehow our wee team was almost managing to compete in both the league and cups. The Celtic side of the time were poor and I think we beat them twice and drew once that season. Anyway that was the first year of season ticket football for me having more time due to finishing my part time degree. me and my Bruv both got a half season ticket for Christmas and we didn't miss a game either home or away from that point onwards, driving down to killie to clinch 3rd spot. There's been a lot of great moments since then, but that team and those personal memories will always have a special place in my heart. As for the current team, as I've said in other threads, they don't know when they're beaten, they've won a cup and sustained European football over several seasons, players coming and going. Tommy Wright has made a huge difference to the stability of the footballing side of things to match the boardroom steadiness. it shouldn't be underestimated what both a calming influence he is, with level headed belief and tactical nouse to boot. So for 98/99 Vs today's team, I'm going to have to................ SIT ON THE FENCE

Old Lethamite
Very difficult to compare eras, especially in view of changes in tactics, fitness levels etc. Watch a video of the England v Scotland 1867 game at Wembley to see how loose the game was then. My question is: how many of the Ormond team would get a game in the current Saints side, and vice versa? I think people's opinions, like mine, are probably heavily influenced by who our favourites are/were. John Connolly seems a stick-on cert, and I feel that Henry Hall could well have scored goals in any era. But Buck McCarry v Murray Davidson? John Lambie v Cuptie? It will be interesting to see what folk think.

We are now watching over a 5 year period the best STJFC team of all timeI would also argue that sturrock totten era could have been better teams too.we are having a successful period in a much poorer football era and in my opinion with a poorer football team.no Rangers in the top flight has most probably pushed us up a place every year and Hearts troubles also, so in general the league is poorer.baltacha, kernaghan, Rhodes, roddy, moore, wright, inglis, o'neil, dasovic, preston, Main, these players would be first choice today.our 1st choices, mannus, easton, millar, Cummings, craig, witherspoon, Shaughnessy, Kane, fisher, Scobbie, not to mention Lappin, Caddis, Sutton, they would not get near stuurock or tottens teams at their peaks.the question was "is this the best team" I think definitely not. even dismissing the 70's team, totten and sturrocks teams were better. babychunder
541ntees
id say that it would be close between Easton/Preston ,Dasovic/Millar and Mannus/Rhodes not to mention Mackay Ando Muzz Macca and Moh

andy rhodes fancy watch
Its also nice talking to Dunfermline fans about George too haha they love talking about Georgie boy. I remember being in the home end at East end park with another saint when they went 2 up and were giving George dogs abuse. Game finished 2-2 with i think George scoring. We had to have a police escort out of there and there were a few big dirty grochels on our jackets, good day out though.
