I remember the 2-2 at Parkhead when the great Celtic European team were at their best but all the class came from the Saintees. Ormond's boy's were still the best on their day but Tommy Wrights is the best overall team but we do not yet have that forward line to match the 70's legends - although thinking about and Spoony's second goal on Saturday they are not far away!success is measured by trophies and nothing else. There are lots of successes in football that don't involve winning a trophy. Agree too John but before my time, you could also apply that same argument to the 98/99 team that finished 3rd, when there was a lot more money around and the tribute act were still in the top league. Markinch Saint Posted December 10, 2015 Report Share Posted December 10, 2015 Again like both of you guys I'm too young to remember the Ormond team, but the 98/99 team also had a resilience about them, the 7-0 humping apart. That was a Sunday night live on Sky sports game where U.S. East standers used to have to move to west stand and give up 3 of our other stands to the knuckle draggers. Kanchelskis dong his party trick of standing on the ball and looking around, taking the piss. You've got to remember that a lot of these players were only at Rangers due to the EBT scam, receiving vast wages, but somehow our wee team was almost managing to compete in both the league and cups. The Celtic side of the time were poor and I think we beat them twice and drew once that season. Anyway that was the first year of season ticket football for me having more time due to finishing my part time degree. me and my Bruv both got a half season ticket for Christmas and we didn't miss a game either home or away from that point onwards, driving down to killie to clinch 3rd spot. There's been a lot of great moments since then, but that team and those personal memories will always have a special place in my heart. As for the current team, as I've said in other threads, they don't know when they're beaten, they've won a cup and sustained European football over several seasons, players coming and going. Tommy Wright has made a huge difference to the stability of the footballing side of things to match the boardroom steadiness. it shouldn't be underestimated what both a calming influence he is, with level headed belief and tactical nouse to boot. No way you could argue the time of Sturrock / Clark we went third when sevco was spending millions and we were trying to keep up as the best team... My question is: how many of the Ormond team would get a game in the current Saints side, and vice versa? I think people's opinions, like mine, are probably heavily influenced by who our favourites are/were. John Connolly seems a stick-on cert, and I feel that Henry Hall could well have scored goals in any era. But Buck McCarry v Murray Davidson? John Lambie v Cuptie? I remember being in the home end at East end park with another saint when they went 2 up and were giving George dogs abuse. Game finished 2-2 with i think George scoring.We had to have a police escort out of there and there were a few big dirty grochels on our jackets, good day out though.
