Even more bizarre that a venue would be chosen that doesn't allow the event to be advertised to the people who might want to go to it! Would be interesting to know how those fans who got tickets managed to get them.

I had fans approaching me asking and as has been said, it was done pretty much word of mouth..  The fact it is sold out so quickly makes the lack of advertising a mute point I suppose..   It was never  going to be something that satisfied everyone.. If I have any further info regarding this or future events I will do my best to communicate with WAP users at the earliest point I can.

Looking at it from the outside, it seems a bit of a strange one given that one of the main purposes of a testimonial year is to raise money.

Like them or not, the Cosgrove and Cowan act is a name in the Scottish football world so would be very attractive to many fans, not just Saints ones. Having it in such a small venue is a bit like having Lionel Ritchie playing in Perth but at the Concert Hall rather than the much bigger, easily sellable McDiarmid Park.

Having gone with a small venue though, you more or less instantly make it a 'hot ticket' and could charge premium prices for it or if trying to avoid accusations of elitism, sell a percentage at a reasonable price with the rest inflated even more, being aimed at the corporate market or those with more money than sense.

Whoever's got Off The Ball has done well but I think a trick has been missed in boosting Midge's retirement fund.

Spot on, sounds like somebody decided to have a jolly for the committee and a few pals, they may as well throw in the player of the year awards at the same time so long as the players don't mind not being there!!

So, was it advertised to the wider support, or, was it a case that Roddy and Steve Browns associates got first refusal?

Just seems strange that a testimonial year is announced, but we are told that the first event is sold out.

This is peak St Johnstone / Perth..........................

Testimonial for fans to celebrate fans' favourite invites celebrity fan to do an event, and it's a "i'll pit yer name doon" type shenanigan. If they'd announced it properly perhaps the event could have been moved to a larger venue, money maker..............but naw..................

NEW LINE SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
OFF THE BALL NIGHT - secret seven only
GOLF DAY - tartan blanket brigade
BOXING NIGHT - east stand
TESTY DINNER @ SALLY - Suit up + WAGS

Testimonial Match.....All spivs welcome.

That is very unfair Phil.   Firstly "The Committee" will have to work at the event and secondly  we  have to give up a lot of time to organise this this and the other events at no personal gain.  This is the third time I have been involved in  a testimonial committee and  every time all I seem to get is folk  giving me a hard time. I know I shouldnae  bother about it but I do.. Now and again I wouldnae mind a bit of support from folk rather than comments  like you have made..

People feel left out. Overlooked. Unimportant. Secondary. But you feel bad..........................................take a list of names, and if enough come forward, move the event (granted not long til it's happening).

As I said way back, the venue was decided prior to me  being involved but the fact is that that is where it is going ahead. The fact is it is sold out. Fact is that  it's no Jolly for me or the other committee members. If people feel  left out, overlooked and unimportant so be it.  If you want to  complain, I suggest you email the committee chairman and would be happy to  give you his email .  And YES I do feel bad but I will continue to post details as I get them of what's going on and when but I am just going to have to stop responding to individual posts because frankly it's proving pointless as the usual WAPPERS  only ever want to have  a go..  As for the secret seven comments..  lololo  Rather than that shite like that maybe you might want to offer you time and assistance with some of the events..  It is no secret being on a testimonial committee and it's  very time consuming  but thanks for your comments..

Some folk don't want to be involved, they just want to spend money with their club. Same here with the Spot the Ball gig.

No taking away the work you put it. It's incredible, you are a real asset to the club, and if Bev wasn't doing it, I'd have you down for SLO.

Just saying, shame it's such a small venue for such a cool event. Clearly there is demand.

All the best with it.

Off the Ball theme surely appeals to everyone?  Golf event less so. Dinner less so. Unusual to get a Sportsman dinner (pie and a pint) with the likes of the Scottish Ant and Dec.

Great concept and personally my interest is drawn to the special guests.  Different guests I might of been as interested as attending the golf event...  unlikely.   Those who have tickets will have a braw night.  Am I bothered about it all, not in the slightest.

I know you were not on the committee when this, the one event that would have appealed to the majority of fans, was agreed and was not having a go at you but at those that decided on such a small venue for what could possibly have been the biggest event of the whole year other than the actual game.

Gordon does fantastic stuff this included and slagging him off is out of order and nothing to do with "Secret 7" shite

I was lucky enough to get 5 tickets through Gordon and grateful for that

I did ask him why they chose that venue and not the Saints Club which could take at least 200

However I was happy with Gordon's answer that it was before his time on the committee

Some folk need to get a grip with some of the comments though

Foghorn is a good guy

Unfortunately Lark by sticking up for Gordon, whom I’ve a lot of respect for, you’ve reinforced people’s opinions ,that it was a case of who you knew to get a ticket, that imo is not right.Ive not been to a testimonial game since Dougie Barrons’,as I think full time players earn much more than me,but many would’ve enjoyed off the ball, but weren’t given the chance, again wrong  imo

Not having a go as a lot of work goes in, but wondering how these committees are set up? Im assumming it comes from a travel/supporters club? I'm sure more people would get involved but it seems a bit of a closed shop

No not at all. A chairperson is appointed ( usually someone who knows the player and is well connected in the business community ) and  then  they approach other people who they believe can bring the required skills to the table.   These skills  are things like  the ability to attract sponsors both through good networking and business contacts, organising  events, being a  specialist in tax, usually someone from the media who can assist in promoting  the  testimonial year, someone with experience of organising  large dinners  & dealing with those providing  these events. Plenty free time is also required so usually a couple of the  committee members are retired or have their own businesses.. As for it being a closed shop??  It's not that kind of committee....  I am simply doing this because I was asked by the chairperson. This is  partly because I have  been involved in other testimonials and also because I have worked in the hospitality industry for 35 years and know my way around setting up a big dinner and organising menus etc...

Hope this help you understand how these things work..

Dave I tend to agree with you that was why I was asking how much they raised for cup tie and and. It seems strange that these groups are raising money for a player and not publicising how much they raised. Remember Jim weir had his presentation of cheque at half time in a saints match.

I think players generally should be doing testimonials for their chosen charities and not themselves. But that is just my own opinion.

As far as I am aware, it is up to the player themselves to decide whether they want to divulge how much was raised ..Unbelievably I agree with you ( up to a point) regarding charities.. I do know that Ando gave a portion of his match money to the foundation of Hearts.. I certainly think players who are earning hundreds of thousand a year should  be donating any testimonial money to charity.  Not so sure about players at our level though

By The sounds of all the moaning Kunts on here Midge should expect a sell out at his " Testimonial game,(If only). It never ceases to amaze me what some of you will find to moan about, if you had known the cost of this "Off the ball" what it is costing you would probably have moaned about that also, Get your arses to his game that is what really matters IMO.

Well deserved testimonial.

Was the Off the Ball event advertised?

I didn’t see it ...please don’t tell me it was a done deal before it was out to Joe Public.. first I knew was when there was a chance to win 2 tickets to the show! (That’s after a sell out) If it was advertised I hope subsequent events are promoted in a more obvious way :-(
