The world famous Dundee United host Saints Colts at Tannadice on Wednesday evening. How the mighty have fallen and how they deserve to be reminded of it! They had 1,600 fans for their first round tie against Cowdenbeath last season, so what an opportunity for the young Saints players to play in front of what could be a decent crowd.

Saints can use players born in or after 1998 plus two overagers. From the first team squad that means Kyle McClean and Ali McCann. Potential overage involvement for Conor Mitchell and Greg Hurst? This is also a chance for the players in the "reserve" squad to get some valuable game time.

Anyone heading through?

£10 to get in.  United are fielding their reserves for this, so an arab mate informs me.

I think it would be great to see a few fans at this.

Next round opens up a trip to Wales, Ireland, England.

Be great to get through to the draw.

Hard one to take for the young Saints players and the 92 away supporters. Saints were coasting thanks to a Hendry double - one strong header from a corner, the other a lovely curled finish - but ended up losing to the last kick of the ball. Even when United pulled one back out of nothing, Saints still looked in control and were moving the ball about much better but a bad mistake let them in to equaliser, then the heads and legs started to go.

Team was:

Sinclair

Brian - Wilson - Shaughnessy - Donald

McCann - McClean

Struthers (Hamilton) - Ballantyne (McKenzie) - Northcott

Hendry

Went with no expectations and ended up gutted, so unlucky for young lads although keeper was probably lucky to stay on after appearing to drag the Utd lad down with a couple mins left.

Better team for nearly 80 mins, Paul McMullan hadn’t done much but his last 10 min performance turned the game.

Few more thoughts on the game:

Hendry obviously caught the eye. Nothing new in his performance but he again highlighted how good he is in the air and the good feet he has. If it wasn't a case of him needing weekly football, you'd feel he could contribute off the bench for us. He tired late on though and (even allowing for the fact he's been injured) that's why he needs to go out and play Saturday to Saturday. Folk talk about the Championship but for me the main thing is he goes somewhere he'll get a full game every week.

McCann and McClean took a while to get going but when they did, controlled the game. Unfortunately, the latter just overplayed it and was robbed for the equaliser. It wasn't even being brave on the ball, he'd beaten his man and didn't need to take extra touches.

Worth giving a mention to Donald and Northcott on the left too. Both new U18s but didn't look out of place. Glimpse into the kind of player Northcott is with his teammates urging him to take on his man every time he got the ball.

It's a shame the reserve league isn't going to give the players that environment - proper stadium in front of a crowd - to play in as I'm sure it was a valuable experience for them.
