Don’t know how accurate this is but
Salarysport.com has our highest earner, after Middleton, as Zander Clark on 2K a week. Gordon way down the list.

There's no way sites like that have accurate figures.

Why then let Calum Hendry go out on loan?

The whole situation really is baffling….

Why not let him go out on loan? He'd done pretty much nothing in the chances he'd had for us this season.

Because if you won’t play Vertainen, you then have no striking options on the bench….

But Vertainen is on the bench and May/Middleton are often there too, so we have plenty of options. If we'd held on to Hendry he'd be struggling to even get a place on the bench most weeks.

I think it's fully justified to put him out on loan. Games + confidence for him. If the club choose not to extend Hendry's contract, he'd be an excellent signing for a Killie/ScumDee for example. Not that we should extend it on that basis, we can't afford it to have someone on the bench (or maybe not even make it), but he's a player I think will be an great asset to certain clubs.

Be interesting what happens with him.

He’s scored a few for Tommy. Could do worse than give him a years contract (assuming we can offer more than Killie), if the Phantom Finn is Finnished.

Seems to be able to score for Tommy at Saints & Killie. He got a few for  Aberdeen as well. Is the problem our style or our striker coach ?.

I would say 2 in 12 league games was a couple rather than a few.

Our striker coach was being praised recently for Kane's golden spell. There's only so much these guys can do then it's over to the player on the pitch for the final outcome. I see a substitutions coach is now being tried down south to make sure the subs are ready and know what they're doing when they go on.(yep, me too) This is in addition to throw in and free kick specialist coaching posts. How about we become the first to have a 'just stick it in the bloody net' coach.

I still think the perfectly good goal he had chopped off last season against Hibs really affected him. That could have made a real difference.

Hendry has scored 3 in 5 games at Killie. Only played 90 mins once. Decent return so far. The goal I saw was a cracker. Should do him some good.

We've not had any single player score a lot of goals in what seems like years and hard to see how we could get a player to the club that will. Only chance would be a wonder kid from a lower league in Scotland or England looking for a step up and usually the rest of their game isnt there to do a lot of the work we see Kane doing every week.

Kane is a bit unique in the sense that you wouldn't know if his confidence is low due to his commitment. He isn't judged on the usual striker/ forward's metric (goals scored/ assists etc), but on work rate. He can still keep up immense workrate even if he was feeling low on confidence.

Hendry's of this world are different- we're measuring him on his goals-games at Killie. If it was Kane being judged on goals-games, we'd be concerned.

I still hope Hendry gets his mojo back and by Christmas we've got a dilemma as to whether to give him a new contract. It's also complicated by the fact we have existing options up front, which makes the Vertainen situation all the more important, whatever's going on.

And there you have the issue with the lad, if you look at the games he scores goals in, he will in the vast majority of them come off the bench. His best spell at Saints cameo roles for the last half hour and at that time he was challenged by Tommy to start doing it for a whole match.  Some of his performances when starting matches have been pretty woeful.

Completely agree with this. He started last season as our first choice striker (albeit probably because May was injured) and I actually thought he played really well in those opening games and was unlucky not to have a few goals. I also felt that in the season before that, under Tommy, he was showing signs of forming a really promising partnership with May. But ever since he lost his place in the team around the time of that Hibs game, he's never really recovered for us, and that's over a year ago now.

To people suggesting Hendry could be offered a new contract - do you really think he'd be interested in signing one here? If he carries on scoring at Killie he'll have plenty of offers. He's not going to want to come back to somewhere he doesn't get a game (and when he does get a game our system clearly doesn't suit him).

Personally I think he'll have a good career at the right club (that may well be Killie), but I can't see any way back for him at Saints. Come the summer, with Hendry off the books and Middleton off back to Sevco again, we'll need to make a new striker a priority if Eetu hasn't come good.

Yep - the issue isn’t likely to be Saints choosing Hendry, but Hendry choosing Saints. The most likely outcome is that at some point he will indicate he rather eat his own testicles than come back to Saints and an offer won’t be made.

Hendry blew every chance he had to be first choice for us.

He started v County, St Mirren and Arbroath, and looked awful every time. He played 120 minutes v Abroath but I doubt anyone can even remember him touching the ball.

He got a good run at the start of last season too and couldn't do anything.

He'll probably have a decent career at this level, maybe Brophy-esque, but I don't think you can criticise the club for being willing to let him move on.

I know we fans have to be sports psychologists now alongside being managers, scouts, tacticians and accountants but I don't get this. Why would having one perfectly good goal wrongly knocked off derail someone's career?

I don't think these guys are the precious little flowers they're made out to be and they must have one heck of a self-believe to get to this level. Is the suggestion he's gone 'l'll never get another goal that counts again. Poor me. What's the point.' rather than 'Sod that. It was a good goal. Still got it.'?

Just my opinion but I really can't see one incident where he was blameless sapping a player's self belief like this.

I must say I enjoy a post with a good turn of phrase!

Don't think anyone has said it "derailed his career". Just that it made a difference. Getting off the mark is important for a striker, and that incident meant he still had zero goals, five or six games into the season. Think he lost his place in the team soon after that and never really won it back. Had he been credited with that goal, things might have gone differently. But of course he's had plenty of chances since then and it was up to him to take those chances.
