He didn’t struggle massively.  He went for a 50/50 and was marginally late as any player can be.  Played a few games for Hearts towards the end of the season and equipped himself well.  He will stay there and try to displace Clark before going into coaching at Hearts.  Haring was injured last season but if he proved his fitness he could be a great asset and captain.

He's younger than Cristiano Ronaldo, Luke Modric and Robert Lewandowski, would you not take any of them?

🤦🏻yes because he is on their level right enough.  Even in his prime he was not that great.  We don’t need guys coming here to wind down their careers. In my opinion of course.   Appreciate your replies though as it is so quiet on this forum with very little discussion on a daily basis.

I think Douglas would be fine in a similar was as Conway was.

Comes in and slowly gets eased out by a younger player and is away next Summer before he properly hits the wall.

We are now in the Has Been and Never Will be markets. We might learn when we drop down to The Championship, and then into the 3rd tier..........if we still exist.

Obviously he's not at their level, but I'm just trying to show that players can still be good enough quality even at that age. We do need guys coming here to wind down their careers (anyone remember Duberry and Jody Morris?) if that is mixed with signing some players in their prime, and others at a younger age with potential. 

We've done the latter of these already with signings this summer, with perhaps Ikepazu in the middle bracket. The problem with Davidson's signings is that he only seemed to sign and play older players.

I would suggest that a player who recently played a decent number of games and won a league which for the last 2 seasons has had a stronger coefficient than ours would probably be a decent signing.

This is pretty much how I feel. I'm OK with us signing older guys if they're clearly still good players who will improve us, and we're not packing the team with them. Where Davidson went wrong was in signing loads of older players who for the most part weren't especially good, and having no line of succession for replacing them. If you look at our squad, we've got past that now: we only have three players (Carey, May and Clark) who are over the age of 30, and we have a lot of younger players at the point of needing to break through.

I don't know enough about Barry Douglas to pass comment but if he's been playing regularly at the top end of the Polish league and his fitness and mobility are still good, then he doesn't sound like worst signing in the world to me. And if we're going to play a back three with McClelland and Sanders in it, those two will probably benefit from the third player being someone with more experience.

I broadly agree too. Not overly concerned about age. 

I'm much more concerned about the type of player. Based on last year, and who we have retained, I think we need players with good physical attributes, ideally big and fast, but higher up the pitch or out wide happy with just pace. 

Availability crucial too, we do not have the budget to carry guys who play 15 games a season.

It all comes down to how fine the margin is.  Is a senior player on the downside of his career a better bet than a rising star from our underage teams.  How good are our coaches at improving players?  Is Douglas better than McGowan?  Can Olefunwa and Parker step up this season?  My instinct is if the margin is so close, go with the youngsters.  Not only does it encourage other youngsters but their parents who suggest Saints are a good option as their sons will get a chance.  

I hope Taylor Steven can become like Philip Scott.  Max takes a major step forward.  Parker like Danny Griffin (bar the injuries.)

Friday will see where we are.  Hopefully, at least with a progressive style of play not more Levein/Clarke pass it back, pass it back.
