Do we need another unde21 at centre half and why give another teams young player game time.

Did he not play midfield for Partick quite a bit.

Although he is young he has a fair bit of experience now.  The reason to give another teams player game time is we don’t have a young player of similar ability of our own and it could be beneficial to both parties.  That’s how the loan system works.

Interesting that McGowan is away. Crying out for some experience at the back now.

Especially with pretty inexperienced GKs.

Experienced + a bit shite = relegation

We tried the experienced route the last couple of seasons and look at the mess we are in. Experience wins you f*ck all!

I just don't think we should be helping teams in our league by giving their young players the game time they won't get in their own team. Just stupid.

Don't have a problem with the loan system as such.

We have loaned players from teams in the same league before, it’s nothing new.  If it’s mutually beneficial then it’s all good.

Personally I don't even think it should be allowed. Up until relatively recently, it wasn't. But now that it is, I guess it's something the club has to be open to. It got us a useful player in Montgomery, for example. I'm struggling to think of many others though.

I nearly always find our loan signings in general to be pretty underwhelming, though I suppose the general strategy each year is to bring in three or four of them and hope that one of them ends up doing the business. The success rate feels pretty low to me, though.

Looks like Saints have given up on ant chance of compensation. Will be interesting where he ends up.

15 or so out the door and 4 squad players in the door. Season starts in earnest next week. I am beginning to worry.

Explain how they’ve given up on compensation? We offered him a deal and he’s turned it down, therefore wherever he ends up will still be due saints compensation. Shock horror you’re making stuff up to suit your anti-saints agenda right now.

One of our issues under Davidson was the imbalance of the squad and I'm a bit worried we still haven't escaped that. On paper it looks like we have too many midfielders yet I'd still say we need to sign at least one experienced CM who is good enough to start every week.

In fact I think the absolute bare minimum we need is two central defenders, one left-back and one central midfielder. All of them need to have some experience behind them, be a good age and be better than the current options in those positions. And in addition to that at least one of them needs to be captain material.

And on top of all that I'm still not convinced we've sorted out our lack of width.

Those are some huge boxes we still need to tick and I know there's still a while to go but I'd hoped that by this stage we'd be sorted out in at least a couple of those areas.

Just for comparison - last year we didn't sign Mitov until 14th July, Jephcott until 21st July and Matt Smith until 5th August.

I bow to your superior knowledge.

Tony Sibbick and Nathaniel Atkinson have been made available at Hearts. Wonder if Levein is using his contacts to make enquiries.

They are up for sale.  Sibbick will cost around 150K and Atkinson who is an Australian internationalist around 350K.  I don’t think we will have this sort of money to spend.

There are very few players in that squad who we can really trust and say they will be a minimum 6/10 every week.  Defence and midfield are a particular concern.  If you look at the squad I would say there is a maximum of 3 players there who would get a start at Ross County.  There is time yet but that is a humbling thought.

And you’d be happy if we had players who were regularly a 6/10? Seriously?

Folks, there is plenty of time before the end of the window. It’s very rare that we’ve signed many players by this point. We’ll have 2 centre backs and a left back at least to come. I expect a centre midfielder and maybe a GK too, possibly a right back. So far we’ve signed the squad players.
