sideline Posted September 29, 2024 Report Posted September 29, 2024 Just a gut feeling but I am a bit nervous about this one. A bit of a real shot in the dark. Hope I am wrong. Quote

Valakari next in the line. His side are 2nd top in Latvia's top league. Who's next? Edited September 29, 2024 by Saintdunc Quote

blueheaven Posted September 29, 2024 Report Posted September 29, 2024 For me there were a few red flags with Lynch and I'm not remotely bothered about him not coming. Whether or not Valakari is actually better I have no idea, but he certainly looks to me like he has the stronger CV and potentially better contacts. Gekko, Linky and Havana Saint 3 Quote

Gekko Posted September 29, 2024 Report Posted September 29, 2024 My head's spinning with all of this. I'd just got used to the idea that Tommy didn't want it or wasn't being considered. Then I'd got my head around that it was going to be Lynch, now he's out and this new lad is in pole position. From the piece in the courier, he seems to have plenty experience and is probably the best suited for the job given his previous achievements. He's also desperate to work over hare and has been approached before by other premiership sides and has nearly managed Motherwell a couple of times, where he played for four years. His experience both here and down south for Derby is a positive. Also, he should have plenty contacts from his time playing, and the fact that he's managed in various different countries. My big worry about Lynch was his potential lack of contacts. That shouldn't be a problem with this guy. A few more hidden gems on our way to us hopefully. This time from Eastern Europe perhaps. Experience, contacts, ambition. He seems to tick all the boxes. Those stats from Random look good as well. pezza70 1 Quote

That could certainly be exciting. We've seen from our own European games that there are some very good, technical and strong players on that side of Europe who most people over here have never heard of but have often looked streets ahead of what we normally see in our own league. Having a manager with knowledge of that region (as well as Scandinavia) could be of real benefit to us. Incidentally, was just reading about Valakari's Motherwell-born, Finland international son who looks to be way out of our price range but, anyway, I'd like to propose as the next Saints nepo-baby. garydavidson, Willie Peat, Cleveland-Saint and 2 others 3 2 Quote
Saintdunc Posted September 29, 2024 Report Posted September 29, 2024 Watch us end up with Duncan Ferguson, or James McPake, or even the Muppet interim caretaker we have now? Quote

Points been made to me that Valakari will have a huge knowledge of Scandinavian football, and Latvia/Belarus type clubs, and contracts at those clubs expire in December. So aye, we could have a raft of Dorley types in January. Quote
Graeme S Posted September 29, 2024 Report Posted September 29, 2024 I'm not sure what I feel about the recruitment process this time around. Yes, there will always be leaks from the candidate end, and maybe this is a "transparency" that is part of the "new direction" the club is going in, but it feels more than a little embarrassing. Maybe I'm looking back with blue tinted glasses, but I feel we used to conduct stuff like transfers and managers in private. Yes, there was always speculation on forums, but, invariably inaccurate and we found out when an announcement was made. Much more.... dignified. Adam, licht up ra bat signal and bring the big fella home. Bring us back our dignity, our identity, our fight, our passion, our graft, and, most of ALL OUR PRIDE. (Not Mewling I hope 🤷♀️) Quote

Ayrs chairman, Brenda Rodgers, and Scott Brown, all talked about that interest. Aberdeens manager talked about the Leven interest. Larnes chairman and assistant talked about the Lynch interest. It feels like that would've all leaked anyway. Valakari probably wouldn't have but the probably felt they needed too once it broke Lynch was falling through. Quote

I think pre social media, forums, instant news etc etc it was probably a lot easier to keep all this stuff under wraps. People would have heard rumours but be less able to spread them quickly. Thinking back through a lot of our other recent appointments, there have always been rumours but perhaps less of a shortlist and less chance of a leak when it's an internal appointment like with McInnes or Tommy. Remember the Martindale stuff all leaked pretty quickly last year, so it happened on Geoff's watch as well. Quote
Kat71 Posted September 29, 2024 Report Posted September 29, 2024 This is all very embarrassing for the new owner and board, also Geoff is probably responsible for this as he hired Levein and Kirk in the first place, rather than going through a proper process at the time. Quote
Gekko Posted September 29, 2024 Report Posted September 29, 2024 Before everything was online, it would have been much easier to keep everything confidential. If somebody did hear something, the only way that it would spread would be if you spoke to somebody in the pub, who knows a guy, who knows a guy, etc. Now, anybody with a phone can get the message out to literally, the entire planet. A cleaner could overhear a phone conversation, go on the phone, and within a few minutes, it's on here and social media. Then the journalists pick it up and turn it into a story and before you know it, it's everywhere. It must be near impossible to keep things quiet these days. Quote

Strawman Posted September 29, 2024 Report Posted September 29, 2024 Am I missing something, when the Americans bought us, they paid X amount of million of which Geoff had said he d put towards Community side. We had money in the bank though did we not, I’m not in know at all hence this post but did we not have around 3 million ? I’m presuming that bank balance moved ownership alongside the sale of club and is still there ? Albeit some earmarked for car park and spent on various upgrades. It’s just I see people saying that Webb and his friends need to invest, surely all they have to do is increase the budget from the money that’s already there ? We re in a mess right now and it’s time to spend the rainy day money we ve had for last 20 years, it doesn’t cost the new owners anything to do that of their own money. If they re convinced they have the right guy to manage, make sure you get him and offer a budget that will make him come. or as I started off saying, am I missing something ? Quote
Northern saint Posted September 29, 2024 Report Posted September 29, 2024 I'd say it is to Saints credit that they have not come out and said, "We offered A the job." They have been clear they will interview candidates and make the appropriate appointment. We see too often players; managers use supposed interest to have new contracts offered. Brown's interest may have been one and if so, he achieved his aim. Maybe we'll hear Lynch is rewarded with a new contract. Personally, I favour a European, no Largs trained manager. If it's Valakari or someone of that ilk, I'd be happy. It will probably someone not revealed on social media. blueheaven 1 Quote
templeofsaints Posted September 29, 2024 Report Posted September 29, 2024 My only reservation about Lynch was the lack of contacts. But if hes decided to stay fair play to him. Valakari is a bit of an unknown but will no doubt have a wide range of contacts across Europe which might help come the mini-rebuild the squad needs. Plus he knows the Scottish setup/market which is a bonus. Quote
