Gekko
Gordon still has bags of ability, and seems huge in the goal. Keepers these days, with all the extra nutritional and physical information we have now, if they look after themselves should expect careers well into their forties. As long as they avoid injury. He would have been a great signing, and I've no doubt that a few of our losses would have been drawn if not won. My problem is that there didn't seem to be a back up plan. RandomGuy
The Rae signing made sense, as did trying to get Gordon and put Sinclair out on loan. The Levein era does seem filled with "right idea, wrong execution" type stuff though. Still raging he punted Taylor Steven and signed McPake. blueheaven
I don't think we ever should have signed Rae and it's just another example of Levein's poor use of the budget. Rae had only just come through the door when Levein started saying he wasn't sure if he'd be number one or not, and we might still need to bring in a more experienced keeper. The manager should have just focussed on getting the experienced keeper in the first place. Instead, he spent money on a guy he wasn't sure about, when we already had Sinclair and Hepburn filling a similar role in the squad. If he'd actually succeeded in signing Gordon, we'd have ended up with a ridiculous surplus of goalkeepers. Macca's strategy for signing keepers was miles better - he went out and got the guy he knew he wanted to be number one (Mitov) and then used the loan market later on to get a back-up (Richards) in when it became apparent we needed one. Linky
Yes, I think Levein’s strategy was “I’ve been told he’s good, let’s sign him up now before someone else does and look at the squad situation later”. That’s fine when you’re at Hearts and you can afford a signing policy like that blueheaven, PerthSaint01, Willie Peat and 1 other
RandomGuy
Valakari saying he won't be signing a free agent keeper before January. Feels it was unfair the goalkeepers had no goalkeeping coach when both were so inexperienced, so wants to give them a chance to build confidence while being coached to see their real level before he spends some budget replacing them. Linky
That's fair, but also there will be some free agents come January from leagues he knows about. A few examples: https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/egil-selvik/profil/spieler/380744 https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/roberts-ozols/profil/spieler/271607 https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ivans-baturins/profil/spieler/319607 https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/hugo-keto/profil/spieler/320053
blueheaven
Anyone know when player contracts are likely to expire for players in leagues like Latvia where the domestic season is about to finish? I know if we signed any of those guys we wouldn't be able to play them until the transfer window opens, but could we actually sign them before that so that the club could get the their work permits sorted out and give the players a holiday while all that's happening so that they're good to play in January? Does anyone know if any other clubs are having as much of an issue as us on work permits? Not sure if the other clubs issues are hidden as they signed early in the close season so it never had an effect on them being able to play matches. rik2304
I'm glad that SV is moving to sort the very obvious issue with the heart of the defence and I'm equally glad the club are backing him. Jan should be interesting.
blueheaven
I'm expecting the club to seriously back Simo in the upcoming window. There's zero point in doing all the other stuff they're planning at the moment, including bringing Simo here in the first place, if they're not going to make a bit of a statement of intent by letting him bring in the players he feels we need to make sure we don't find ourselves in yet another end-of-season panic. I don't think we need a massive number of signings but we do need some real quality. Even if it's just one central defender and one goalkeeper who both have a bit of experience at a good level and can slot straight into the first team, I think that'll make a big difference and be far more beneficial than making another raft of substandard signings as we've done in too many windows over the last few years. Cagey
There will have to be a few signings with next season in mind as well as according to "not the old firm" we have 21 players out of coñtractin the summer. There are a few we dont want to re-sign but I hope we are trying to re-sign those we do before we lose them on pre contracts.
