Gekko Posted August 13 Report Posted August 13 (edited) Sandy McLaren for me. The first Saints international. Still the youngest goalkeeper to play for Scotland. Also, one of only four eighteen year olds to play for Scotland in the twentieth century. Denis law, Paul McStay and Willie Henderson being the others. Good company, and he was way before any of them. He was also a local lad. Here's his Wikipedia page: Sandy McLaren - Wikipedia ETA: He's also, still, St. Johnstone's most capped Scotland player. Mizfit Posted August 13 Report Posted August 13 I think Sandy McLaren is one we should consider. I’ve also seen Atholl Henderson mentioned due to all his activities and prominence while at the club. Quote

blueheaven Posted August 13 Report Posted August 13 It has to be Tommy Wright for me. As fans we never really got a chance to say goodbye to Tommy and I think this would be a really nice (and hugely merited) thing to do while he's still relatively young and can experience it. In lieu of a statue at the ground of him holding the cup, this would be the next best thing. I also think that as well as having the fan nominations, the club itself should put a couple of people in each time - this would be a way to ensure places for figures from further back in our history, such as Robert Campbell and Sandy McLaren, who deserve to be in there but are probably never realistically going to win a fan vote because their time was so long ago. blueheaven Posted August 13 Report Posted August 13 Also just to add: I wonder if there's an argument for expanding the Hall of Fame concept to have one notable 'team' being inducted each year, alongside individuals? I think it could be argued that the whole Double-winning team could go in as a team entry, plus the 2014 team, the 1999 team and the early 70s Ormond team. Probably a couple of others, too: how about the XI who played in our first ever match, for example? Or the XI who played in our first ever women's team? Quote
Mizfit Posted August 13 Report Posted August 13 I think you could dedicate an entire HOF meal to the double side in itself. Quote

I don't know if I'm correct in my thinking (somebody will know!) but, with regards to Robert Campbell, is the Campbell Suite in hospitality named in his honour? If so, am guessing, if there isn't already, some form of commemoration would be best observed in a suite that's named after him? 🤷♀️ Quote
sixties saintee Posted August 13 Report Posted August 13 Mr St Johnstone, Sam Mckenna, ran the aid clubs, supporters busses, an got Barrosa st club built. Quote

They already have stands, so do they need a Hall of Fame place as well? If the Campbell suite is named after Robert Campbell, maybe more of a plaque, or some kind of explanation on the reason it's called that. Graeme S 1 Quote
Strawman Posted August 13 Report Posted August 13 My first nomination is Tommy Wright My second nomination is Tommy Wright My third nomination is …… You get where I’m going with this. If he doesn’t get in this time it all starts to look bizarre. I fully accept Callum Davidson has to go in at some point as well, great player first time round, our record sale ?, came back after a successful time down south and ended his playing career with us, Tommys assistant in 2014 and then the double as a manager, I can’t quite bang the drum for him yet though, just a pity he wasn’t a more likeable chap. A lot of this is personal choices, Alex Totten deserves a place for me. I’m not sure I’d have put Roddy in as one of the originals ahead of so many great players from the past. Loved Roddy and Steve Maskrey as players but why those two from Tottens team ahead of Moore for example. My thoughts are we are far to slow getting people in, think I’m right it’s 15 in 12 years, 14 on the board earlier in thread but Geoff was put in first year as well hence his name at the top. An annual event or at least bi annual putting 4/5 people in each time would soon balance it out. Liam Craig ( record appearances ? ) Stevie May, Spoony and O Hallaron all 3 times cup winners have to go in at some point. If it was annual, you could have one place reserved every year for someone from the past to be put in, If it’s nominations and votes, I’m always going to vote for Stevie May over Sandy McLaren, ok I ve got and read his book but I feel it needs a different way of sorting out who gets in from the past. Maybe our historians could be allowed one a year to put in, that would be my suggestion, blueheaven 1 Quote

Gekko Posted August 13 Report Posted August 13 (edited) Sixties Saintee made a good shout above, with a supporter getting recognition. I know we're getting to the point of the nominations being overcrowded, but how many people do we know, who have dedicated their spare time to the club? They did raffles on the supporter's bus, organised events on their own time and the like. Maybe we should have the event more regular than we currently do as Strawman suggested? Anyway, my nominees for this time are... Sandy McLaren Tommy Wright David Wotherspoon Stan Harris (Bev gets the award next time) Along with Alistair Stevenson, who we already know is getting an award. Also, a special supporters award for somebody like Sam McKenna, as Sixties Saintee mentioned. ETA: Add me to the list of people who'd like a Tommy Wright statue of him holding the cup. Mizfit Posted August 13 Report Posted August 13 The Grass at the top of the carpark is a prime location for a statue of Tommy Wright with his cup, and when the timings right a statue of Callum with his 2. Quote

Lubolzer Posted August 14 Report Posted August 14 I dont see anything for supporter Hall of fame. Players and managers come and go but supporters are around for life some of them. That should be recognised. sixties saintee 1 Quote

Needs to be at the main stand somewhere, so away fans have to see it every time they enter the ground. blueheaven Posted August 14 Report Posted August 14 Might be in the minority with this but I'm not a fan of including supporters in the hall of fame. The way I see it is that as fans we're all equal and we all do what we can. The idea of some fans being more deserving of recognition than other fans always makes me cringe a little. Also in most cases the majority wouldn't even know who those people are so I'm not really sure how you'd choose it in a way that is fair or meaningful. With successful players, managers, chairmen etc it's a bit different because we all know who they are and we've all been able to enjoy what they've brought to the club. As fans we're basically stuck with the same team for life, but players/staff always have the choice of going elsewhere so when they choose to stick around and make a significant contribution then that really means something.
