Any news on how our lads are going out on loan?

There have been a couple of articles in the Courier recently about Scott Bright on loan at Forfar:
https://www.thecourier.co.uk/fp/sport/football/st-johnstone/5470223/scott-bright-st-johnstone-jim-weir-forfar/

https://www.thecourier.co.uk/fp/sport/football/st-johnstone/5465736/st-johnstone-scott-bright-forfar-loan/

The second article also talks about Hepburn who could be in with a chance of getting a league winners medal whilst Forfar are now into the play off positions with a couple of games to go. He has three clean sheets and 37 saves from 16 games.

Simo seems pleased with the progress of Bright with Jim Weir being the manager at Forfar and making improvements to his defending.

Id be interested to see Bright pre-season again, so hope hes one who has a further year on his contract.

Was pretty impressed by him last pre-season but thought he looked nervous in the game against County I think?

Forfar loan seems like its been ideal. Played regularly, had struggles, but also had good games. One where he'll have learned a lot from hopefully.

If we go up does that mean we can enter into the co operative loans just like the one we have with hearts or is there a limit on how many players on loan you can have?

You can only enter that with a club from the division above, so after promotion our deal with Hearts ends and we cant replace it.

In terms of outgoing, we already had an agreement with Cove, which might not be renewed. Youre allowed to "cooperate" with 1 club per division below you

Out of interest did you see the Man City, Celtic, St Mirren or Raith goalies at the weekend?

Wait...other goalkeepers have made mistakes?

Goalies really are arguably the worst position mentally in any team. Half the time they're staring at the turf, then expected to suddenly jump into action in a second. No wonder they have a dedicated Association which includes psychological assistance. Remember the England keeper, Robinson that scuffed an easy back pass Vs Croatia? Bounced just before he was about to hoof it and went in. He never recovered.

I just saw a video from Allaster McAllaster covering that very moment earlier today. What a howler.

Here's how the squad stands going into the summer window. With 20 players either out of contract or due to go back to their parent clubs, I think it's probably fair to say there will be quite a few changes to come over the summer, regardless of what league we're in next season.

Goalkeepers

1. Toby Steward - 2026 - on loan from Portsmouth

20. Ross Sinclair - 2026

39. Kyle Thomson - 2026(?)

Craig Hepburn - 2027 - on loan at East Kilbride

Defenders/wing backs

2. Reghan Tumilty - 2026

3. Cheick Diabate - 2026

5. Bozo Mikulic - 2026

25. Scott Bright - 2026 - on loan at Forfar Athletic

33. Liam Smith - 2026

35. Adam Forrester - 2026 - on co-op loan from Hearts

52. Arran Brookfield - 2026

4. Morgan Boyes - 2027

14. Mattty Foulds - 2027

15. Jack Baird - 2027

Midfielders/wingers

7. Jason Holt - 2026

8. Jonathan Svedberg - 2026

11. Sam Stanton - 2026

19. Taylor Steven - 2026

22. Stevie Mallan - 2026

24. Josh McPake - 2026

27. Alfredo Agyeman - 2026 - on loan from Falkirk

46. Fran Franczak - 2026

51. Murray Binnie - 2026 - on loan at Jeanfield Swifts

23. Sven Sprangler - 2027 - on loan at Newport County

42. Reece McAlear - 2027

Forwards

18. Ruari Paton - 2026 - on loan from Port Vale

10. Jamie Gullan - 2027

21. Kai Fotheringham - 2027

9. Josh Fowler - 2028

17. Louis Lloyd - 2028

We are in a really fortunate position now to have secured the league and can now start building the squad ahead of our return to the Premiership. Hopefully Simo, Gus and others can be as successful in the summer window as they were last summer.

Of the current players, would hope we can get Diabate, Stanton, Holt and Smith signed up on new contracts soon. Diabate is still relatively young (24) and if he is able to eradicate some of his lapses of concentration, I think he will become an even stronger asset for us and could see him moving on to a higher level. I have some reservations about Jason Holt being a starter in our midfield every week in the Premiership, but he has been an outstanding captain this season and deserves another year. I think Liam Smith can do a job for us next season as well. He is always solid enough and has started to show more in an attacking sense in recent months.

Goalkeeper is going to the key signing for us in pre season. There will be clamour for Toby to return again, but I would rather we don't get drawn into having to wait all summer for Portsmouth to make a decision on whether they are loaning him out again and look to get someone in permanently for the start of pre season. Ideally looking for two keepers in the summer.

In defence, Tumility will move on, so we will need another right back and at least one other centre back. Will also be interesting to see what we do at left back.

Would like to see some more physicality in the middle of the park. MacAlear more than capable of playing up a league and have already given my thoughts on Holt. Ideally looking for two wingers. Stating the obvious by saying it will be really difficult to replace McPake and the creativity that he has brought to the team. Stanton and Gullan more than capable of doing a job next season.

Up front, I think we will look to sign Paton permanently. He is the type of striker that Simo likes in his team and if he can replicate his performances over the past few weeks into next season then he will do well. Been really impressed with his hold up play, he is not afraid to get into a battle with defenders and has also shown he get amongst the goals as well.

Will be interesting to see what market the club look to sign players from. I wouldn't be surprised if we looked to sign some of the players from some of our rivals this season.

We might see Stanton in CM more a league above?

Portsmouth secured their Championship status last night so planning wise we shouldnt hopefully be waiting on them over Steward.

So with our new owners and the fact we need to resign or bring in quite a few players I wonder how much we will need to increase our budget.

If the clubs smart about it they’ll announce season tickets are for sale in the next couple of days while it’s still on a high. I’d even start sending emails to those who have benefitted from community day tickets too.

There’s a lot of goodwill now we’ve not seen in a long time and I can’t see them failing to capitalise on it.

What about next seasons strip so they can be worn proudly on holiday.

I’d say that’s dependent on what happens with Iran, you’d imagine it would be coming through the strait!

Need to get some of those contracts sorted soon.

Ross Sinclair - I would keep as an ok back up if he doesn’t want to leave

Liam Smith - at times has looked like top division standard

Bozo Mikulic - another chance perhaps?

Cheikh Diabate - worried he might get better offers, but equally wonder if he’d be a bit shaky in the prem with his possession

Taylor Steven - shown he’s worth a contract as back up, but may want first team football

Sam Stanton - one of the best players this season

Jason Holt - wouldn’t want him to play every game, but has been decent

Toby Steward - would he have another year on loan?

Ruari Paton - get him signed. Doubt he’s had enough game time to have any other offers

Can't argue with that.

Think Paton still has a year on his contract and Port Vale would probably want a decent fee.

Was speaking to my mate at work...a long suffering Vale fan. They have no strikers capable of scoring (top scorer is a midfielder who has 4 goals from 28 games)

Reckons Port Vale will want to keep him if they cant get anyone in. Doubt whether that is what Paton would want though.

Fee wise they just posted a big loss but owners have deep pockets so who knows?

If they wanted to keep him, why send him out on loan? Unless a new manager has come in who wants to reassess the squad

Paton's mother (stunner btw), wants her son to stay. Lovely person. I feel a bit sad, but it's football. Steward - no chance

I think we're well aware of the strange decisions made by clubs/managers that end up finding themselves relegated. Essentially their strikers are gash and Paton is very publicly sticking the ball in the net.

While I hope Gus is busy getting contracts in front of existing and new players it would be great to see him get some recognition tomorrow. Getting the right players in early has allowed up to start the league quickly. Over the season it's become clear he's been pivitol in turning around our recruitment. He took some flack for a couple of years but be nice to see him take a bow.

I would hope that we would give new contracts to Fran , Bright and Binnie who is an unknown quantity but is knocking them in at Jean field. These guys wouldn't be on big contracts and would be good back up.

All those years of development with nothing at the end of it would be disappointing.

Webb said he would follow the Falkirk model which as far as I could see was keep the core from the Championship and bring in a few decent loanees. Not sure if they made any decent signings.

You would think if a team with Col Donaldson, Liam Henderson and Brad Spencer could make the top 6 then anything is possible.
