Scobby_SJFC Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 Right then who we going for?? for me Romania, just because they are the REAL underdog!! would also like to Spain or Holland do well, as they have some exciting players, who if they could get it together could play some great football Quote
Dev Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 Romania are an interesting team, they've had a good build-up and did very well in qualifying. If they weren't in such a ridiculously tough group then I'd fancy them to make a bit of progress. Even so, when I did an incredibly biased Euro 2008 predictor recently I had them and France getting out of the group of death. I'll probably follow Croatia as I've supported them in every tournament since Euro 96. Sadly I think the loss of Eduardo is a hammer blow for them as he was the fulcrum of the team. Without him their attack doesn't look nearly so dangerous. I'll also be supporting Germany as I'll be in Hamburg when the semi-final matches are being played and it would be good for atmosphere if they were still in the competition at that stage. On paper they have real strength throughout the squad and Ballack has been in great form of late. Spain look as if they have a decent chance but as usual we'll expect them to go no further than the quarter-finals. I personally hope they don't even make it out of their group! Essentially though with Scotland not there and no England to laugh at I'm just hoping for a lot of good, entertaining games rather than supporting one particular team. The more goals the better. Hopefully the flair players like Ronaldo and Ribery can have a good tournament. Quote
Steve Zissou Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 I was backing Italy until I heard about the injury to Cannavaro, but i still wouldn't bet against them. They were deserved winners of the World Cup, and they've retained much of the same squad. I think they play some pretty tidy football when they want and are much more attacking than Italian teams of the past. The Germans may lack a bit of flair, but they have the organisation and determination to go far. Also, if Ronaldo keeps his form, and Portugal keep a bit of discipline then they have a good chance of winning. Like many, i would like to see Spain win it. They were one of the best sides at the last world cup, and were unlucky to meet a French side who suddenly hit a bit of decent form. I also have a soft spot for the Czechs, as I really enjoyed watching them at Euro 2004. It would be nice to see a new team lift the trophy too. Quote
ryangordon86 Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 I'll probably follow Croatia as I've supported them in every tournament since Euro 96. Same, Croatia for me too I also have followed them in major tournemants since that time, but im not sure why?! Quote
Dev Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 Same, Croatia for me too I also have followed them in major tournemants since that time, but im not sure why?! I'm not really sure either. It would have made sense picking another team to support if Scotland hadn't qualified but we were there. I think I just liked the fact that they were almost unknowns, a new country at their first tournament. Plus their strips were fairly unique and they quickly turned out to have some absolutely class players! Quote
Grovesred Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 Turkey, because I got them in the office sweep; £16 riding on the outcome. Also, you have to feel sorry for them missing out in the play-offs against Exeter and getting beat by Ebbsfleet in the FA Trophy final Quote

I was thinking it must have been the strips for me, i bought their home top to take with me to france 98. They do seem to put bloody good teams together too Quote

Scobby_SJFC Posted June 4, 2008 Author Report Posted June 4, 2008 Sheer genius that goal, also chipping the greatest gaolkeeper ever is no mean feat Quote
Dev Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 Sheer genius that goal, also chipping the greatest gaolkeeper ever is no mean feat In the same tournament there was also that chip by Poborsky against Portugal that people raved about. It was never in the same class IMO, not least because Peter Schmeichel was hugely superior to Vitor Baia. There's also the build-up to each goal - Poborsky stumbled his way through a couple of challenges and his goal didn't have half the grace of Suker's effort. Just a few minutes earlier Suker tried to chip Schmeichel from just inside his own half and Schmeichel only just got back onto his line to save it. Suker was an absolute genius. I just watched the hour-long Euro 96 review on the BBC website, it's worth a watch to have look back at the tournament. It is pretty England-centric but I think it was fairly unbiased and they treated Scotland fairly well. It's available here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/euro_2008/7421046.stm Quote
Scobby_SJFC Posted June 4, 2008 Author Report Posted June 4, 2008 That was a great game Dev, my favourite European Championship game ive ever watched was Holland v Czeck Republic played at the Amsterdam Area I think?? 3-2 to the Czeck's and was a cracking match, remeber Nedved especially smashing a 30 odd yarder off the bar , with van der sarr and peter ceck making endless great saves. Quote
Dave H Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 if you are unsure yet: try this little one http://www.the-onion-bag.com/euro2008/100yards.php Im supporting Romania Quote

Yes, thats probably the best game I've ever seen. It was at the last Euro Championships in Portugal though. They did play in Amsterdam in 2000, and the Dutch won 1-0. Quote

Quote
Dev Posted June 5, 2008 Report Posted June 5, 2008 Why? do you not like to watch attractive football with the best players in the world? or would you rather watch greece go though again? Completely irrational. I just don't like them much. Makes the tournament a bit more interesting when you hope certain sides fail and others succeed. Quote
StDuncM Posted June 5, 2008 Report Posted June 5, 2008 Not sure why, but I fancy Russia to wake from their slumber and maybe go all the way. Quote
HertsSaintee Posted June 5, 2008 Report Posted June 5, 2008 For various reasons, I always support Holland after Scotland, and that's the way it'll be this time. Shockingly difficult Group though, and they'll have to play really well to get out of it if France and Italy are on form. Quote

Dev Posted June 5, 2008 Report Posted June 5, 2008 I think we have shown France and Italy can be beaten, especially France France we have but let's be honest we were nowhere near getting a result against Italy even with our own fans roaring us on. They'll be really formidable opposition for anyone. Quote
Scobby_SJFC Posted June 5, 2008 Author Report Posted June 5, 2008 Yeah well give you that one, but we were close to a draw against Italy at Hampden Quote
SingaporeSaint Posted June 5, 2008 Report Posted June 5, 2008 Winners of the Italy, France, Hollan, Romania group will go all the way IMHO Quote
