Any other James Bond fans/anoraks on the forum?

I've just started watching them over again, watched Dr No and From Russia With Love the last two nights and I'm going to watch Thunderball tonight. I skipped Goldfinger because it's my personal favourite so I've seen it many. many times before.

What's your favourite Bond film?

Not an anorak as such, but do love the films.

Got probably most of them on DVD and stick one on now and again. More often than not it seems to be Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies.

Of the older ones i cannae see past Diamonds are forever.

I can't bear James Bond. It's just exactly the same thing over and over again - a leering old bloke in a suit makes sexist remarks while some ridiculous villain attempts to take over the world. I think he's a really dislikable character - unfunny, smarmy, completely bereft of any self-awareness and generally an all-round arsehole. Sean"Rubbish" Connery's involvement in the early ones makes them particularly awful. The only ones I find even remotely stomachable are the Timothy Dalton ones - the rest are poo, although admittedly I haven't bothered watching any of the Daniel Craig ones, and it's unlikely that I ever will.

I just think it must be the most tired franchise ever. How many films have there been now anyway? Surely everyone gets the idea by now. If any other franchise spawned about 30 sequels and kept going, it would be universally mocked for it - yet nobody ever seems to criticise Bond for churning out the same old garbage every few years. In fact, quite the opposite happens, with endless press speculation about who the next Bond will be - why do we need to have one at all? Even Police Academy knew when to stop.

From Russia With Love is my favourite of the older ones and I liked Goldeneye when it was released. Made a pleasant change from the pretty dire Licence to Kill that came before it!

Moore's Bond was too comical for me so it's got to be Connery as the best Bond.

I just bought Devil May Care, the new book, so looking forward to getting stuck into that.

I think Licence to Kill is fantastic! One of my favourites. I've heard people slagging it off before but I don't really get it, I really like it.

Just about the only thing I agree with in Blue Heaven's post is that Timothy Dalton was a really good Bond, both his films were really good IMO. What was actually really dire were the majority of the Roger Moore films, especially the later ones. Moonraker, Octopussy, A View to a Kill - all pretty terrible.

I liked Living Daylights but not a fan of Licence to Kill.

Agree entirely about the majority of Moore's films although at least they introduced Jaws and I think The Man With the Golden Gun is in my top 5.

Interested to see how the Quantum of Solace pans out. I thought Daniel Craig was pretty good in Casino Royale.

I'd agree about Goldfinger being one of the best too.

"D'you exshpect me to talk?"

"No Mr Bond, I expect you to die" - fantastic line!

Not another bloody Gretna thread, please.

Jaws in The Spy Who Loved Me is fantastic, probably the best Bond baddy there's been. The problem comes when he returns in Moonraker and instead of being the mean killing machine he once was he's now got all loved up. It's cringeworthy. I really don't understand how they could possibly think this was a good storyline:

"Well, here's to us!" Whoever wrote that storyline should be shot.

I quite like The Living Daylights - not only is it the best Bond film, but it also has the best Bond theme tune. I think the only reason I like it though is because it feels like virtually a stand-alone film in its own right to me - Dalton didn't seem to take up the rest of the Bond baggage and, for me, is the only actor who's even come close to being likable in the role.

Sean Connery, though, is awful and as far as I can recall he's only ever turned in two good performances in his entire career - in The Untouchable and in The Last Crusade. And he plays practically the same character in those two films anyway, so strictly speaking it's just one good performance!:P

While I'm at it, the only good moment in Pierce Brosnan's career is the bit in Mrs Doubtfire where Robin Williams chucks a piece of fruit at the back of his head.

I'd expect you'd probably enjoy Casino Royale then if you gave it a chance. It takes very little from previous films in the series and definitely stands as a very good film in its own right.

I probably will watch it at some point when it comes on TV, but in everything I've seen of it I've found Daniel Craig to be exceptionally annoying. I'm not generally one for judging films before I've seen them - I worked as a film critic for several years so I've learned that films you often think are going to be awful and would never normally watch, can often turn out to be excellent. But I do struggle to get past the Bond thing - then again, though, that's something the Bond producers encourage as much as anything, because they know that most people see the Bond name as a positive thing so it gives their film an instant, ready-made audience whether it's any good or not.

I've got the whole set and have seen all of them so many times. That the middle to later Roger Moore period is the worst. Ones like View to a Kill, Octupussy and Moonraker are pretty much unwatchable, but Man With the Golden Gun and Live and Let Die are relly good.

Picking a favourite is difficult, probably Goldfinger and You Only Live Twice tied at number one.

Living Daylights is probably my favourite (managed to visit the mansion in Tangiers a few years ago - it was owned by the publisher Malcolm Forbes and all those model soldiers were actually part of his collection).

Spy Who Loved me (opening sequence especially), Goldfinger and You Only Live Twice are close behind though. My mate celebrated his 40th with a Bond theme night and hired out a screen at the Dominion cinema in Embra to show Goldfinger - excellent seeing it on the big screen
