  1. Crackin tune that - must be about 2 years old now ? The LP is pretty hard going though. I'm diggin' that "Young Folk" by Peter , Bjorn & John and also have just heard "THE DYKEENIES" single as i type and it is a belter-their from Cumbernauld. # I see "The View" are on that hellish Transmission programme on friday night - must remember to tape it
  2. How do you classify under or over-rated really - chart success ? Anyway after a lot of thought the band I've liked most in my life that never really made it on a big scale were the best band ever to come out of Australia THE GO-BETWEENS Sadly Grant McLennan singer/songwriter/guitarist with them died this year and they will be no longer after getting together again a couple of years ago The best introduction to them is a "Best Of" cd called "Bellavista Terrace" but "Tallulah" "Liberty Belle & The Black Diamond Express" & "Spring Hill Fair" are all fantastic LP's. Saw them loads of times in the 80's and on a comeback in the late 90's and they were always great live too. Site at http://www.go-betweens.net/
  3. Now how did I no think of that Nice one
  4. Hoping to go to one of the www.tonthefringe.com gigs but not sure what one yet Teenage Fan Club at the Barras 29th Sept doing the whole of "Bandwagonesque" - should be a classic night New Order at the Carling Academy on 18 October not heard any of The View's stuff yet but from what I'm reading I should like them - just heard them talking about them on talksport and they said they were from Glasgow and that they'd played T In The Park at Glasgow recently the boy was from the NME tae not Andy Townshend or Parry
  5. Positives Halliwell looked pretty confident - came for crosses and also the charge out of the box near the end i reckon the Clyde guy wasnae too sure about the 50-50 with him as he's a imposing keeper. McManus played away OK We created a lot of chances although a few admittedly were from set pieces - on another day and possibly with Hardie + A.N other we would have won 5-2. Negatives Darren had a quiet game and you do worry if its a season to far but is Derek Young the type to take over...we'll see FOLK MOANING AFTER ONE GAME Come on we'll get it together and give Gretna a good run - they got possibly the best game they could have got to open their season. Nowhere near good enough but enough wee bits to see that we're not too far away from being a decent team.
  6. I thought he played pretty well when he came on - not quite the kind of role i thought he played with Aberdeen though - looks like he needs a few games but i'd say he was worth persevering with
  7. Kevin - any chance of playing "The Internationale" for Tommy before todays game.. Viva La Quinta Brigada
  8. I never for one minute doubted him. Would you get on the bad side of Gail Sad it all happened though as mud always sticks in modern society

  13. I'd have got it if you'd typed it right I think The Tube was 1982 as thats when The Jam broke up and their last Live TV performance was on the Tube in December 1982 - still got it on VHS along with loads and loads of stuff from The Tube. Fridays were clas in those days - finish at 4pm get the No28 Bus up to Strathtay Road - have your tea , watch the Tube and then get the No.28 back down town as soon as it was finished - halcyon daze
  14. Here's the lowdown on the god-like Tony Burrows - gutted you got it guys If there's one thing you're likely to know about Tony Burrows, it's that he's the only man to appear on a single episode of Top of the Pops three times with three separate bands. That was in early 1970 when his session-career was at its peak and records by The Brotherhood of Man ('United We Stand'), White Plains ('My Baby Loves Loving'), Edison Lighthouse ('Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes') and The Pipkins ('Gimme Dat Ding') were all in the charts together. All of them featured him on vocals (alongside Sue and Sunny in the case of the original Brotherhood of Man). To get to this position, Burrows had already put in a decade of work. Through the 60s he had got to know most of the songwriters who went on to dominate the early years of the next decade - writers like Tony Macauly, Tony Hiller, Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway. The later two he played with in The Kestrels, a band which went back to National Service days and which supported The Beatles in the early days (teaching them, according to Burrows, how to bow in advance of the Royal Variety Show). He subsequently joined The Ivy League (after their most successful years, unfortunately) and was still with them when they changed their name to The Flowerpot Men and had a hit with the fakeadelic classic 'Let's Go To San Francisco'. Apart from this one-off, the decade failed to reward one of the loveliest and most versatile voices in British pop, and by 1969 Burrows had had enough - he resolved to give up touring and instead made himself available for session-work on the promise that, although he'd promote stuff on TV, he wasn't doing gigs. He was in instant demand and the series of hits in early 1970 date from the last few months of the previous year when his recording diary was full. The fact that they all hit virtually simultaneously was something of a poisoned chalice for Burrows. At the end of that record-breaking edition of Top of the Pops, he was approached by a staff member and told that he'd been unofficially blacklisted from the show - apparently it was starting to look like a bit of a fix, having him on every other record. For the next four years, although he continued to sing on countless hits (he reckons it's somewhere around 100 top twenty hits during the 70s), he wasn't invited on TV and found his own records didn't get played on the radio. The record that broke that streak was probably his best: 'Beach Baby' by The First Class, a beautiful recreation of 60s high school pop written by John Carter, another one of The Flowerpot Men. I was also quite fond of the follow-up, 'Bobby Dazzler', which took the piss out of 70s pop manipulation and which was consequently ignored by the industry. Burrows is still singing, though his love of cricket seems to be even more important to him, and is gradually starting to get the recognition his work deserves. Admittedly there's some ropey stuff in there, but even on the weak material, his singing is almost always worth hearing. Ronaldo - I canny believe I never got Bowie - in fact I feel like Victor does all the time John Peel on Maggie May is probably my all time TOTP fave moment - it is a classic piece of how "rock" should be done - Great song-Great Performance...and footballs being kicked around. I'm sure there's also a cardboard cut out of the late great Ronnie "Plonk" Lane in this performance too as he wasn't well at the time
  15. I dont know why but Robert Plant ? My one was 1970 i think (I need to check) It wasn't a Christmas Special - 3 different groups in the Charts at the same time TOTP was a religion in those days although I read this bit of trivia from Mojo in the 1990's sometime - 1 of the songs is a real belyter although they are all.."pop" I'd say I really don't know if I want to give this one away
  16. Assuming most people know the background of this song is actually "Pump It Up" by Elvis Costello & The Attractions. I'm a big fan of Elvis's early stuff but give the thumbs up to the Rogue Traders version.
  17. I know 5 of those Ronnie (I think) Mr Jones is the stumbling block. In the very early 1970's a person performed with 3 different acts THE SAME NIGHT on Top Of The Pops - Name of person and the 3 acts and their songs. Best bit of Pop Trivia I know.
  18. Just back from Bibione in Italy. Very hot and got absolutely savaged by the mozzies Good place though - loads to do for the kids and 1 of the best beaches in Italy.
