Ukraine veto Scots' Euro fixtures

Scotland get difficult draw

Scotland's hopes of kicking off their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign with back-to-back ties against France and Italy looks certain to be shattered.

Scottish FA chief executive David Taylor fears Uefa will have to step in after Ukraine vetoed fixtures agreed by the other six teams in Group B.

"The indications are that any additional proposals from Ukraine are not welcome," he said.

"The prospect of a draw is looming larger now."

Ukraine rejected the provisional list of fixtures agreed by the other six nations during two days of intensive talks in Paris last week. The organisation of the calendar, which gives France the advantage of playing its last four games at home, puts other participants at a disadvantage

Ukraine statement

"Faxes have been exchanged between the associations following Ukraine's decision to make several other suggestions," said Taylor.

The Ukrainian FA have accused France of carving up the draw to suit themselves and are angry that the five other countries agreed to let them play their last four matches at home.

They have until 27 February to accept current proposals or a Uefa ballot will decide dates and venues for the entire Group B campaign.

A statement from the Ukraine FA said: "The management team of the national team cannot accept the calendar that was created on 10 February.

"The organisation of the calendar, which gives France the advantage of playing its last four games at home, puts other participants at a disadvantage."

Scotland had hoped to face France at home on 6 September, then Italy at Hampden on 7 October, before a trip to Lithuania on 11 October.
