As my mate just pointed out, 10 years ago we were about to kick off the season under John Connolly, a season where we finished 8th in the First Division, now we are eyeing up another run in the Europa League, the 3rd on the bounce oh and we currently have the Scottish Cup sitting in the trophy cabinet at McDiarmid Park.

Quite incredible when you think about it like that.

We never plan anything for before Cup final Saturday. Unfortunately I didn't expect us to win the Scottish Cup so let another guy at work off. Thus leaving me unable to go to Lucerne.

I will be there this week though.

Being a Saints fan never involved Europa holidays. This supporting a big team is a nightmare for holidays and the bank balance!!

Motherwell had less than 5,000 last night.  Let's ram all the jibes about our tiny support right back down the West Coast-biased media right back down there throats, especially after the utter contempt they showed our club last night.  COYS

Geez, started reading the thread not knowing exactly who Jimmy was. Very sad to find out it is "Friar Tuck". Sorry about our immature "digs": when we  were stupid young laddies on the bus. I know all of us had the greatest respect. A very sad lost to the Saints "family"

Just had another look at this stream after nearly 2 months.  Still gives me the willies, it's all so inspiring and sad at the same time.  To be honest I needed a wee bit of inspiration to throw a sickie and head to Switzerland and new these posts would provide just that.  Thank you folks.

    Sad news indeed.

I spoke with Jimmy a couple of weeks after the cup win when he was out with his family in the town centre. He was frail and more softly spoken than previously but when I started to speak to him about the cup win, his eyes lit up. He told me that  SB and Roddy had been up to visit him prior to the final which meant the world to him. He also told me about HIS cup final day where he watched the game in the nursing home. He told me off the fright he gave the nurses when Ando scored. He said he just went daft and started roaring, at which point they came running through thinking he had perhaps fallen out of his wheelchair. And when McLean scored the second he knew the cup was ours. I am delighted that Jimmy got to see his beloved Saints finally lift a major trophy. I could see just how much it meant to him. I do believe they also took the cup up for him to see.  I glad he got to see it.

    RIP Jimmy.

My Dad. He's in his late 80s now and can hardly walk the length of the front room anymore. He also struggles to hear properly and gets confused quite easily. He's had a season ticket for 60 years - and still just about manages home games (his pal parks right in front of the main stand and a very short walk to his seat).

I tried everything to persuade him to go to the final but the practicalities of parking close enough to get him in and his likely confusion and possible panic with such a big crowd means that he will be watching everything on the box from the comfort of his armchair (probably with a glass or two of whisky in hand).

I'm sad he can't be there but he seems philosophical about it and is delighted my 8-year old daughter will be with me and will shout on his behalf.

He's never given up on Saints - to paraphrase the Shrugs - he's followed the Saints through the glory and the strife. He's had his heroes - Paddy Buckley, Henry Hall, Johnny Brogan - but like many here, he never abandoned Saints when we were at our depths pre-Geoff.

I wish he could be there with us. He was my inspiration to follow Saints - taking me to games as a youngster from 1974. Jim O'Rourke, Bobby Thompson and Mickey Lawson were heroes for both of us.

What I would give for a Saints win tomorrow - I desperately want my Dad to see it - even if he won't be there in person. His loyalty and passion for Saints over the years deserves it.

Year after year folk state desire to give youngsters a chance ahead of journeymen on daft salaries. Year after year it doesn't happen.

In my opinion, the club are gambling on NOT employing journeymen and genuinely putting faith in our excellent and ever expanding youth setup.

We can't sign names that will bring in punters. Goodwillie wouldn't have sold another 500 season tickets to folk desperate to watch his world class skills, and let's face it, he was never affordable for a club like Saints.

If we had the likes of GMS, Gauld or Robertson suddenly breaking into the team as 17 or 18 year olds, then the unknown quantity of excitement might just put bums on seats.

Not saying these guys are amazing, but for a spell last season there was a buzz all around the country about United's young stars.

Brown, Kane, Easton, Thomson, Kitchen, etc. etc. one or more of these names could be better for us than a dozen Goodwillies.

It's a gamble. It's also a gamble that fans have been crying out for for as long as I can remember.

Every club in Scotland is hard up. Squads are smaller, budgets are shrinking. IMO, there is an abundance of journeymen out there who can come in on loan or short term deals if required as injury cover, so why pay them until they are required?

I don't have 3 backups at my job in case I get ill. Pretty sure if I took ill then they'd employ cover for me. Simple. Why should football be any different.

Tough on Steve Brown, who is useless in front of a microphone, but ultimately doing the right thing IMO. With some decent PR spin and better timing, this could have been a positive story too.

wrong on so many counts! He was highly regarded at the Club by all who knew him, he will be sadly missed by many at the Offices. He was presented with a Season Ticket for life a few years ago.And he was unable to go to the Final the Club visited him with Mementos including a framed   Cup FinalTop.i have read a few of your posts of late and not agreed with them but to now use the passing of  a popular Saints figure to have a dig at the Club is well.....Just low!

Just bought my away ticket over the phone from the Ticket Office - excellent service from the girls there as usual.  Apparently we received another 290 and 'they are going like hotcakes'. She expects them all to be sold in the next few hours.  With the others who are getting their tickets over there, think we'll have at least 750 fans - and probably more.  Cannae wait!

Not read the article, but, for me, that is all I was looking for....something coming out of the club that explained the position. If there is no money for new players, then so be it.....disappointing yes, but we have to trust the Chairman to manage our finances responsibly

I think the number of seats in the away end is about 850 to 900, which would match into the UEFA rule that 5% of the stadium capacity must be given to the away fans normally. So don't worry about tickets, there will be plenty.
Generally there won't be a big crowd, I think a maximum of about 8000 as the Europa League in Switzerland still has a pretty bad reputation with occasional fans and gloryhunters. It's considered as the "losers cup" by them, but believe me for most of the season ticket holders the EL is a huge highlight. Then the game takes place in the second week of Luzern's big school summer break. Since at least every second family (my estimation ) is on holidays for the first two weeks of the summer break, there won't be as many families as usual.
BUT I don't really mind. Since we've got the big plastic bowl as our new stadium, the best ambiance was at the Genk game two years ago with only about 7000 fans. Second best in my eyes was at the deciding game against Thun when we qualified for this year's Europa League. So expect a small crowd in which every one can sing like 2 persons. :-D
I have to admit, I'm really getting excited and nervous already. So badly looking forward to the games.

    Ok - go to
    www.sbb.ch/en/home.html
Fill in the the boxes on the left hand side
Go through the next process of filling in your name etc - there is a drop down menu - pick no discount
You will then come to a screen which shows various train times (around  your specified time) and the price
A little bit further down on this screen there is a box marked Supersaver - click on this
A number of trains will appear around the time you specified earlier and they will have the discounted price listed next to them
Pick the one you want and repeat for your return journey (do not pick return on the earlier screen as it is a return for the same day only)
Print your tickets and away you go

It appears the only drawback is that if you use these tickets you can only go on that specified train and there are no refunds

Dumbarton! That's desperation on their part. Where does it stop? Ramsdens cup? League cup?

We won the Scottish cup and was the best day of my life, but I do think that putting a star above or badge for doing it is desperate, plus the remaining premiership teams would literally piss themselves laughing if we did. The sheep have won it seven times and they don't have seven stars. They do have one however for their euro win back in the day.

When TW wins the Europa league for us next season then let's get a feckin massive star above our badge.....but a national cup....we don't need a star. Let's now play it a bit cooler.
