True, but then they both had a great pedigree, both had played at the top level in England and in Europe, so there was less of risk.

The likes of Cleveland Taylor came to Saints with good reviews from fans of clubs he had played for in England, but he was a disaster. Look at Jennison Myrie-Williams. Rotten for us, but went down south and started getting rave reviews.

There is no doubt there will always be a few diamonds that we can pick up, however personally I would much rather see us go for players who have an understanding of Saints and the Scottish game in general. Look at our recent success, built on players like Dave MacKay, Frazer Wright, Steven Anderson, Chris Millar and Steven MacLean who have an understanding of Scottish football and what is required to win a game at this level.

Which may be no bad thing. Alex Totten and Derek McInnes both tried to bring players up from England, however most of them were a disaster. Think Martin Buglione, Cleveland Taylor and Sam Parkin. I personally would rather see us try and bring in younger players from the lower leagues in Scotland than try to sign some journeyman from the lower leagues in England.

The reality is, that outwith the English Premiership and the top ten sides in the Championship, the standard in the lower leagues in England is not any better than we see up here.

Wouldn't take him back,he's not got pace to hurt teams,we do miss his goals from midfield, but not any better than we have in his position,ie Lappin

Blue heaven sums up my thoughts very well.

I also still have a lot of resentment towards our Chairman and board for the way they acted in the aftermath of the Cup Final. Instead of building on the good will towards the club from a large amount of people, the negativity that came from them led to a negative vibe hanging about the support heading into the new season. I never expected them to go out and suddenly buy lots of players, but they could have struck a better balance between investing in infrastructure and investing in the squad. They said we had no money, but it took them weeks to get the season ticket applications out after the Cup Final, which I have no doubts cost us a few extra quid.

The reality as well though, is that outside of Celtic and Aberdeen most of the teams are of the same level. Every once in a while players like Stevie May, Stuart Armstrong, GMS, Eremenko (In first spell at Killie) will come along and elevate a club above the others, but that only happens once in a while.

Hopefully the club will be more organised this pre season and the board will allow Tommy Wright to recruit early so that we are not left chasing around for scraps at the last minute.

We need fresh faces, I think that's glaringly obvious. Players who have done well for us in the past have become a little stale and predictable this season.

On a side note, very impressed Aitchy managed a bite there.

I would like to thank all the saints we have met during last weekend! We really enjoyed the hospitality and the atmosphere and of course the win over the dundee bastards!
It would be our pleasure to arrange tickets for any of you who want to come over for an Ajax game and we hope to be back next season for another game of the saints,

Easy win but could and should have been easier. Yet again second half after going a goal up in the first we resort to an utter shit fest with every man behind the ball defending the lead. Tommy keeps talking about how we are having to cope with losing a 27 goal striker. Continually harping on about it won't help the players confidence. I'm sick of hearing about it. Its over 30 games ago.

The fact is our mentality prevents us scoring goals. Our tactics prevent us scoring goals. You're not going to score with 10 men in your own half for half a game.

As for the substitutions. Yes, we all love Macca but personally I want to remember him fondly. Flogging him for 90 mins every week when he can't do anything right isn't fair to him OR the fans. He needs dropped until he finds his form because he shouldn't be near the team just now, hero or not.

Anyway, rant aside, the back 5 were super as usual. Millar and Lappin were also terrific, great engines. Going forward only really Graham played well and to be fair to him, in the last few weeks he's looking like a player I want to see here next season. He was good in the air, worked hard and scored a great goal. Kane also looked lively when he came on.

Spoony had a poor afternoon, nothing really went for him. Shame as I really like him as a player but perhaps needs dropped also.

Lappin struggles with simple 10 yard passes nevermind actual playmaking . Swap Lappin and McFadden with actual footballers and we'd be in a European spot .

I was a massive fan of Swanson once he played for the Arabs and was delighted once we signed him. For the DABS he was fast, creativity and skilful, which is exactly the type of player our squad needs. If his wage demands weren't too high, I would be tempted to give him a years deal. A full pre season and a run of games might help him rediscover his previous form.

A few of the papers reporting that Alan Mannus will sign a new contract in the next few days.

If true, it's fantastic news. Genuinely didn't expect him to stay on. Won't be happy until it's confirmed though, remember last season we were all told that Stevie May would sign a new deal only for it to drag on.
