Commenting on a players form on a football forum is one thing, ironically cheering him off during a match is another.

I touched on it earlier with the ironic cheering of Spoony when he went off and the booing of Allan Mannus at a goal kick. You've made a fair point comparing it to Dumfries last year, that's exactly what it was like. Not often I look at a group of Saints fans and wish they'd f'ck off home. Everyone was disappointed and thought it was obscenely poor from the team and management but not everyone felt the need to act like that. I felt totally ripped off last night but don't feel the need to single out guys like David Wotherspoon on social media suggesting he's not fit to wear the jersey and he's stealing a wage. None of that helps.

And he's only here for the same length of time as Darnell? So the "he's our player" argument holds little weight.

You make a good point, his passing is actually very good and he does always look to pass into feet. It came off more often than not on Friday night too so the guys are obviously getting used to it as you say. He definitely needs to improve defensively although he did put in an excellent tackle on Friday that got the crowd going a bit.

After about an hour, I just sat back in my seat and started to lose interest in the outcome of the match. This doesn't happen to me very often. I almost always keep faith until the very end, but it was such a 'nothing' display that we were never going to get a positive result. The performance was abject. No desire or quality in any area of the pitch. Darnell Fisher and Danny Swanson were the only two players who showed attacking intent (for approximately 20 minutes).
The one thing which disappointed me more than the team's performance was the minority of our support who behaved in quite a poisonous way from the very start of the match. Shouting abuse at individual players, shouting abuse at the manager, booing the team off the pitch at half-time, cheering substitutions.. I can't imagine that it has any kind of positive effect. I don't blame a few of the players for rushing off the pitch at the end of the match without applauding us. There was a guy near me who shouted insults at John Sutton, which he clearly heard, whilst he was warming up at the side of the pitch. Really embarrassing stuff all round, reminiscent of our cup tie in Dumfries last year.
A real low point. I still believe we'll get out of this rut and finish up in the top 6.

Spoony's body language was dreadful from the word go. He looked like he had the worst bout of flu imaginable and was being asked to play a game of football on a freezing cold, soaking wet night in February to boot. Who knows why his game suffers so badly as times but it's the managers responsibility to not hang him out to dry like that when he's so off form. We have seen in the past - whether we agree with it or not - a couple of games on the bench and he inevitably comes on and changes a game and is back to his best. Thomson should've started last night. Failing that he should've replaced Wotherspoon, not Craig. The most ironic thing about last night is that we got worse after Spoony went off. Which probably says more about TW than Spoony. The substitution was shocking.

Not read through the thread, but here's my tuppenceworth.

I'm usually the type who tries to see the positive with Saints and I'm prepared to accept that we can't win every game.  However, I'm not prepared to accept a complete lack of fight and couldn't care less attitude and that is what was delivered to us last night.  It's hard to believe that this is basically the same squad who have fought and battled so hard over the last few seasons, because that was laying down and being bullied of the very worst kind last night.  These players are currently cheating the fans and the club and should be thoroughly ashamed this morning.

I did raise my eyebrows slightly at the comments which were obviously aimed at Neilson. I agree with Gas Monkey that the leave table probably suggests a different story but my interpretation of what Danny meant was that Neilson likes a physical "stifle the opposition" first style of tactic then build an attack from that. They've got enough quality in attack to make it work and it's a good combination to have. I think Hearts have obviously got a very good squad of players but in the majority it's full of physicality and they overpower teams, it's their style (a bit like Aberdeen, although Aberdeen have much better attacking players). Ultimately Danny was probably being asked to do the kind of physical work that just isn't his forte. He knows that we have other guys who will be the work horses and we will look to him for the creativity. Although I appreciated his comment where he said he doesn't shy away from doing his fair share of the work.
I thought it was a great interview and really inspired a level of positivity that has been a bit lacking of late. It was nice to hear a player talking about looking up rather than down, which is where the majority of fans seem to have focused their gaze of late. The parts about his wife doing his head in to come back, his friendship with Murray Davidson and the annoying Chris Millar were funny and heartwarming. He came across well and as you say it wasn't full of the usual bullshit patter you normally get from these interviews. He seems like a character and we need those in a small squad.
