No idea what year, but we played Dunfermline in the cup at McD....must have pretty much sold out as my ticket was front row, Ormond Stand, about level with the post. Anyway, was giving Ross Jack pelters the whole game...of course, he scored a pen to beat us 1-0.....on scoring, he ran straight up to me and said "stick that up yer arse"

I seem to remember Inglis scored at Well and the usual false rumour spreading through the stand that other results were going our way....only to face the massive dissapointment and realisation at the end that we were doomed to relegation

I'm sure that was the game when O'Boyle scored but it was called for offside, we would have stayed up if that was given. I cried all the way home after that game

Being a younger Saints supporter, I've only been attending games since 1994. Had my season ticket every year and would like to think of myself as a true supporter. I find it almost frustrating at times that some of the older fans will question your St Johnstone-ness because you weren't at a midweek away game against Ayr in 83.

With the extreme commercialism of football it is very rare to find younger folk supporting their local side. Of all my mates only a small handful support saints and even less attend the games. The banter isn't there for most of the younger ones, there mates would rather be at Parkhead or watching Man United in the pub.

A few seasons ago I had a kilt fitting for my wedding. It was Dundee home and all the lads agreed to come to the game after. Sitting with around 15 of my best mates when Sheerin scored THAT goal. We went mental! I think then my mates realised why we are St Johnstone fans.

I enjoy hearing the stories of the past and of players I never got to see, buy also have respect for the school kids that choose not to glory-hunt and support SJFC.

Respect given....hopefully in 30 years you will have your stories to tell for the youngsters then to enjoy

Ah the memories.....

I wouldnt have considered myself an Old Saints fan, but my first memories of Saints go back to the late 70's.

Probably started following them regularly in 87-88, with first season ticket the following year. Reserve games on a tuesday night at muirton, feeling well important sitting in the main staind behind the dugouts, cheering on real heroes like billy blackie et al.

The afore mentioned away day to stranraer (was there really only one guy gorilla?) Trips to foriegn climes (berwick) and the obligatory chants of "where did you get that hat" to the bobbies. Sitting at home listening to updates of the game V albion rovers on the radio. The only game I missed that season, and I was sure it was my fault for not being there that we went two nil down... then what seemed like a goal a minute to keep us on track.

A cup game against hearts at tyncastle, I think we were humped 5-0, but the roar from the hearts fans when they scored there first was the first time I had heard that many voices celebrate a goal against us, and was a bit of a reality check of where we really were in the pecking order.

Then the complete flip of that was my first trip to Ibrox, and Saints totally out singing them unwashed. I will always remember a moment about 5 minutes before kick of when the saints fans launched into "oh when the saints..." and every face in the main stand & enclosure turning in surprise to us as one. We may have put there gas at a peep, but I think we got beat 2-0.....

Leaving Parehead at the end of the 0-0 semi final, with my favourite ever saints team (minus Stevie Maskrey after his assualt at Starks Park) holding of the high flying r@ngers... and being bitterly disapointed becuse I was so sure we would have beaten them that day. I am sure to this day that Ally McCoist deliberately played badly that day cos in his heart he was still a saintee.

These vignetes of achievment and camaraderie were what made being a Saintee all the sweeter. (Looking at the video posted be Radford, I saw how much enjoyment the team had in playing together back then, which definitely rubbed of on the supporters)

Saintee til I die!

Whilst i agree with what you have written, look at it from where we are coming from, go and look up where queens park and east stirling are today in the league, thats where we were when we talk about some of the times on here. They were our days, we rarely called for the managers head, we had a squad of players who worked other jobs but came out and gave there all for our club, if they broke a leg then they couldn't work, but they wanted to get back and playing because maybe not the best, they wanted to play, be the best they could and gave there all for us, the fans. And there wasn't alot of us.

People nowadays are too critical of minor errors from players, people make mistakes, as they did then. But when we played well, we were outstanding. Although not the greatest team.

We all hope that there are more like you out there just waiting to see saints for what they are, to support them through thick and thin, shite and muck.

We Are Perth

100% support this post and the sentiments behind it. Any young person who fights the power of televised football, the lure of EPL, computer games, the web and the Old Firm desrves maximum respect.

Young Saintees are the real die hards.

That's an attitude and a perception we have to change. I have two boys who within in their own right will be/are diehards and we are only talking 19 and 12. Hopefully this thread explains better. Us old codgers know that the younger generation are as or more important than us. We maybe had less choices what to do with our time and it was easier being a saintee anyway back yonder ***.

Another great night was away to East Fife, midweek, mid nineties. Absolutely freezin.

They just signed two Trinidadians which took the last two work permits, which stopped Rangers signing an international(can't remember who, don't care).

Lindsay Hamilton was in goal for E.F. Great second half banter, game ended up 2 all.

Two things really stuck in my head were,

The tannoy announcer askin in the broadest Fife accent 'Would the owner of a Hunda please return to yer motor as ye've left yer lights oan' Granted you probably had to be there! Only a lucky couple of hundred were.

And when the afforementioned Trinidadians came on for a cameo appearance, LH turned to the Saints fans and said ' Now your f#@ked, the bobsled team's comin on!!)

Classic from a legend

Anyone mention the match at home (Muirton) v Celtic to get into the first 'premier' league (no the spl)?

Was it 1974/75 or so?

Had to win if i remember rightly, and we did. 2-1 I think.

Shame cos the next season we were bottom with some kond of poor record.

This was my first ever match, and the greatest moment I've ever had supporting Saints. I remember walking up the stairs into the Centre Stand and seeing the pitch for the first time, all vivid green, and it was exactly the same feeling that you see in the film of Nick Hornby's Fever Pitch. I was ten and overwhelmed with excitement. Our winning goal was a penalty and we hung on for the win. I was convinced that next season we were going to win the league.

My enthusiasm has never dimmed, even if my expectations have...

Saints being so poor that the addition of Willie Brown, Steve Evans & Charlie Adam transformed the team for the better ! Still got pumped of a Shaggy Jenkins inspired Dunfermline though. Thinking we'd done well to only lose 2 1 at home to Forfar in the cup as they were a league above us.

Remember that period well and although depressing the camaraderie and spirit still existed and here we are back in the top league. Keep the faith!

The addition of molly brown did the trick, hatrick in his debut against albion rovers, we got 7 that day.

To think, we got excited beating albion rovers. Wouldn't change it for thw world though.

I was on the trackside, right beside the Albion dugout, with my brother, who is a wheelchair user.

I'm sure Albion took the lead cos a couple of their guys on the bench shouted GIRUY to me and my brother who had been talking loudly in a negative way about their team to wind them up.

Then we started to score the goals. After about five I just leaned across and looked in the dugout with my hand cupped round my ear. They were raging. Hilarious.

I'm sure it was that same game when Molly Broon was tearing across from the middle of the park towards the dugout area to make a tackle and the Albion guy saw him coming and just gave up and ran away. Hilarious again.

It wasn't all bad down there in those days, and getting beat at home to some right diddy teams was not unusual.

Funny how the mind plays tricks. Had it in my mind it was against East Stirling. Guess I was wrong. Remember going to East End Park expecting a win and getting pumped 4 - 0 just after this game with Charlie Adams sent off. Realised it would be a while till we got back up where we are now but as you say it was fun at the time.

Albion Rovers game 5 - 2, best Saintees moments ever - I've got a terrible memory, but for some reason this game sticks in my mind.

Pouring with rain, away end had strange pipes lying on the terracing, so we all had a pipe-ballancing game pre-match. Anyone remember that?

Massive puddle in front of us and a fat ginger ballboy...cue chant's of "Who ate all the pies"! He never did fall in the puddle though. That was the only 1st half entertainment.

In the second half they moved the ballboy to the other side, spoiling our fun.

Midway through the second half Cherry just seemed to go "screw this"......got the ball from a free kick at the half way line and just ran at their defence, avoided a few tackles and blasted it in the net. They kick off, Cherry steals the ball and runs and scores again. They kick off Cherry steals the ball again, simple pass another goal...Baltacha comes up for a corner...oowph....end result...5 - 2

BRILLIANT!

Yes do remember that. Can picture a squad of Saints fans falling and sliding through mud down a hill outside the ground, great mad festival atmosphere. It was Glastonbury in blue and white.

Glad to see it's not just my memory. The supreme Sergei was a summer signing for the SPL. Great game though in the run up to the Airdrie game. Have all 4 TV games from that season on a VHS tape with a gash cover titled "Totten's Triumph". Need to convert it to DVD while I can still remember how to.
