Havana Saint
We looked a lot better in central midfield with McDonald than we have since Davidson came back. Shame the wide midfielders are an absolute disaster at the moment. Summed up brilliantly Monkfish. Muzz will be a miss, however at times his plays replicates that of an enthusiastic 7 year old in the playground kicking a can of Irn-Bru. craiginasaintsstrip
The bashing Gary McDonald gets on this place is bordering on obscene, yes he's a defensive minded midfielder through and through so it's not the most glamorous of positions but he's more than able for our requirements, looks like one of our most athletic players too. Dooj
If Gary Macdonald is such a terrible player, why does Tommy Wright play him? Surely, if he is as bad as some say, then Tommy, a manager who seems to be almost universally rated by Saints fans, would be able to see this too? Why would he have such a blind spot with Macdonald? craiginasaintsstrip
I thought he was a link player who supports the attack. That's fair enough, I've just never seen him as being as attack minded as someone like a Muzza or a or a Wotherspoon.
SlickDT
People keep saying MacDonald was good against Rosenberg. That is a myth he did not have some amazing game and certainly did not "Dominate" anyone. During particularly the home game it was infuriating how often he gifted the ball away. Last season he was our worst regular starter by a country mile. This season he has done absolutely fine most of the time. Completely disagree. In the away game against Rosenborg he had a very good game. Full of running, asked for the ball to feet and didn't go hiding at any point. MacDonald is nowhere near as bad as many make him out to be. Edstar101
I think MacDonald will become a key player for us over the remainder of this season and next. As somebody else said, if the wide midfielders had been producing, then I think we wouldn't be focusing on Gary's role
Cagerf
We have to remeber it is a team game and we need a variety of types of plate Gary Mc is not the flashiest of players but also he does not seem to have the wide swings in form of a spoony for example. (Typical for Halloween spoony came out as spooky!) Edited October 31, 2014 by Cagerf
THE LARK SAINT
Hi ya Mcdonald haters, have you noticed the 3 games we won have had the very harshly treated No 8 in the team.

The other players upped their game to compensate is all that suggests.

Thats school playground logic. We won 3 games where he was playing, Therefore hes good. So if he didn't miss the games he was out injured we would of won them all then? SlickDT
Controversial but our midfield always looks more balanced with him rather than Davidson if playing 4-4-2.
Cagerf
Gary Mc starts and we win is he just a lucky mascot that works or does he add something that the haters have not seen whatever we won tonight.

Cagerf
I think because he does not run around like an idiot but holds the shape we are supposed to be playing people underrate him he stepped up for some important tackles and snuffed out some attacks particularly second half last night. He also did the same against the the. pete1967 and Havana Saint
Dooj
If you judge a player by what he does when on the ball, then he was okay. If you judge a player by what he does when the other team is in possession, then he did okay
monkfish
There were multiple occasions where he was neither a) in a "holding" position (i.e. if we lost the ball he'd be in a good place to snuff out an attack) or b ) showing for a pass. He was instead hovering in a no-mans land where the game passed him by. So what was he doing on those occasions, if not hiding? I still think on the whole we look better with him in there than we have with Davidson recently, but it doesn't excuse the above. mainstand
monkfish I have never seen tommy Wright as vocal as he was tonight. Every single player was getting it in the neck. If Gary mac was hiding then he would have got it with both barrels. I doubt if any saints players performance is being scrutinised as much. Cagey
Poor Midge had to do all the work in midfield. Their midfield were getting loads of space as he couldn`t cover the whole midfield himself.
