i believe we have a match against Celtic at home in 6 days which is all ticket. on the the 21st of Jan they mentioned how celtic fans can download an application form and season ticket holders can get ticket from the 6th general sale info will follow.

either they have forgot this or im missing something?

anyway i presume they will be on sale just in case anyone would like to attend

The St Johnstone Facebook page is constantly updated and reminding you about things, think the Twitter page is the same. The only fans in the dark are the old fogies

Given the need to get as many through the gates as possible, we can't afford to ignore the 'old fogies'. I agree the FB page and Twitter feeds are generally good, but the main site is still the first port of call for many. I can't see why the main site can't be updated along with the FB page with the same feed?

The official site, Facebook and Twitter should surely all be working in unison with each other, and share the same editorial voice. The official site should be the place where the club gets to elaborate and provide full details on the short, snappier updates that go out on Facebook and Twitter. Personally I feel the club has got much, much better at social media over the last 12 months or so, but I still say there's a desperate need for an e-newsletter and online ticket sales (which the newsletter would promote).

There is some simple code that inserts a twitter feed into a website. This means they can include their twitter updates on the website without doing anything at all. I investigated it a while back when designing a website - i think you can get the code directly from your twitter account settings and just import it into the html code for the website homepage. 10 minute job.

Just had a look - settings on twitter and then select 'widgets' and choose the 'no replies' option (and a few other options, size, colour etc or the 'widget) and then it produces html code that can be used on the website directly. It shows a wee preview of it too. Really really easy to do.

From my experience, updating a website is maybe a half hour job, whereas updating a twitter feed takes about 30 seconds.

Is this worth emailing the club to suggest, or is it something they are probably well aware of anyway?

They could do all of that if they were a content business, but they are a sports club with very limited resources to meet the ever expanding content distribution channels. Yes, the argument that they could make money etc.... but until there is something like the English Football League Fli Websites, this will not happen.

It is always worth contacting the club with full details. They are advertising quite a lot for additional help so if you can provide them instructions for such things I am sure they would be glad.

...but they're already managing to generate the content for the OS and social networking sites (along with the match programme), so much of it is really just about refining a strategy for bringing it all together a bit better. Would a promotional weekly e-newsletter really be so much extra work on top of that? The club has marketing people and could surely also call upon students, interns, volunteer fans etc to chip in? And launching an online ticket sales system doesn't require any significant extra content at all. Down south pretty much all professional football clubs now do these things.

I sometimes wonder how much it would cost to have a full-time specialist brought in for a year or so to get this side of the club sorted out, in comparison to how much the club pays certain footballing members of the staff who barely ever get near the pitch.

could just as easily have a twitter 'widget' on here somewhere, if someone wanted to run an account for WAP. I have emailed the club to suggest linking one to the OS.

I think in the name of fairness it has to be said that the club's use of social media has improved considerably since 2008. I don't think it needs a full-time club journalist to take it on - it should be part of a marketing person's remit.

I completely get what you're saying about it costing money and not directly generating revenue. I just wonder how much revenue the club generated off the back of employing (for example) Craig Beattie.

All you need to do is go the the Saints website and click on either the big blue F or the T on the official links on the left hand side of the page. Then your in either the facebook page or the twitter. You don't need to have an account on either to read them.

I think a lot of older fans think you need to have an account to view either and as its linked on the main page its takes as long to get to either item as it does to click on a news item from the home page.

I contacted the club a good few years ago about newsletters and its something they did use for a while, the good thing about most newsletter packages is they show you not only who has opened the mail shots, but when, how many times and what you have clicked on. At work we sent one today to 8,240 subscribers, as off a couple of minutes ago I know 980 people have opened it (a low percentage as we normally hit 15-20%) a total of 1.304 times. I can see that one of the hyper links has been clicked on by 68 people a total of 81 times , yet another only once so over time we can get a handle on what people read and what they don't. I think newsletters do have a place, but our stats have fallen over the last few years as we move to other more instant shorter forms of communication.

Season ticket information by Newsletter, yes.

Monthly update from the manager by Newsletter, yes

Updates on games or match photos, No

Reports from under 20's games No

If you use the Newsletter function more than 3 or 4 times in a month people will just unsubscribe or move you to junk mail.

I am sure Ross will be delighted that you want to clone him. Its great to have the pre and post match interviews, player features and a few new things that are on the way, please make sure you all use them as the more they are used and shared the more likely the club are to try new things.

Or you could go the same way as Saints are trying this year, it may be a little disjointed but you have the club running things during office hours and individual volunteers doing the official twitter, facebook page, match day reports, writing for the programme. I think the video productions for Saints TV are the only element of the new social media that's is costing the club anything
