Brilliant performance from the U20s today against a club that have won the last eight domestic competitions that they've entered. Thought Saints merited their lead when they got it, Kane scoring an excellent header after and equally excellent cross by Coultress who broke clear, but began to sit deeper and deeper and started inviting Celtic onto them. They brought on a couple of subs to effectively go four up front but even then Saints weren't close to what could be classed as hanging on, so it was disappointing when a bad error from Scott Gray let them in to equalise with a few minutes left. One of those moments where he wants the ground to just open up I suspect.

Great character from Saints to pick themselves up though and not just accept extra-time and they probably took advantage of Celtic have so many attacking players on the pitch, with left back Andrew Steeves getting in the position to swing in a great cross which was met by great header from Scott MacKenzie. He'd only been on the park a few minutes and clearly loved it, running towards the fans and giving the badge a couple of kisses. Chris Millar has obviously taught him well.

Deep into injury-time, MacKenzie robbed a Celtic defender, burst forward and rifled a brilliant drive beyond the goalkeeper from 18 yards to seal a much deserved win.

There wasn't a weak link in the Saints team today and all of them can rightly feel they played their part in a superb victory, playing good football into the bargain.

Starting team for those interested was Hurst in goal, back four of Gray, Kitchen, Gilchrist and Steeves (from right to left), with Brown and Stewart in the engine room, Thomson and Easton in the wider areas and Coultress supporting Kane in attack.

I remember going to the BP Youth Cup final at Hampden Park in 1995. This lot could go one better.

Obviously Alistair was in charge but what was the team that night Radford?

Team for the 1995 final was:

Stephen Robertson - Went on to play first team football for Saints and had a decent career with clubs like Airdrie and Alloa.

Kenny Munro - Played senior football for Cowdenbeath, East Fife and Montrose.

Robert Baillie - Another who played for Cowdenbeath after leaving Saints.

Stuart McCluskey - Decent servant to Saints until 2002 or 2003. Tainted himself by playing for Dundee.

Danny Griffin - Still haunted by the words Derby County, was a brilliant player for Saints for a good few years before injuries took their toll. What should have been...

Stefan Winarski - East Fife and Montrose were his senior clubs.

Scott Young - One folk might not remember as playing first team for Saints but he did. Also at Dunfermline before moving to Northern Ireland. Was boss of Glentoran.

Andy Whiteford - A striker at this stage, he played as a defender for the first team and played senior for Stirling, Clydebank and Accies.

Martynn Mullen - A Scotland schoolboy international who Saints signed for West Ham, his named popped up a few years ago in relation to an anecdote told by Frank Lampard, who spoke of this really talented player who mocked Lampard for staying behind after training to do extra work.

Craig Reynolds - Was with a few other senior clubs but not sure he managed to get a game for them. Dunfermline were one.

Paul Rice - When the topic of these players was discussed on Pie and Bovril a few years ago, there was no trace of Rice.

David Mathieson - Sub goalkeeper that night, who spent time with Queen of the South and Gretna, where he kept Alan Main out of the team for a while.

Excellent result. Well done.

This group of youngsters are extremely talented and deserve their success today against a club who generally have the pick of the young talent, due to their superior financial clout.

However, success cannot always be bought. and this result will give the current crop of youngsters a huge boost.
